I just bout a spyderco mule in 9Cr18Mo . I would like to handle it myself but im a bit confused as to what materials I should choose to handle it with. Id love to work it with micarta or g-10 and brass pins, but I dont have any experience in shaping these materials. As an alternative I was thinking either a wood like cocobolo or a cord wrap. I'd rather not do a cord wrap if I can help it but I'm not sure what would be a good material for someone with not much experience to work with. I also wanted to know if brass pins would work for my needs or if another material would be better. Thanks in advance

Use a hack saw to cut, plastics file to shape, and various grit sandpapers to polish.
They can be applied both for hard wood or micarta.
Brass/stainless pins works as you can see on the products among the market.

Please use a good respirator, too. G10 dust is full of fiberglass fibers that can give you silicosis. Cocobolo dust burns the lungs at best, and at worst, will give you a severe allergic reaction. Other dusts may not be as bad, but you really don't want to be breathing any of it.

I personally find hardwoods to be more forgiving than G10 or micarta. That might simply be because I'm more experienced with hardwood.

Barn mats can be purchased from Tractor Supply Center... good low cost source (huge chunk for not a bunch of money), and are rubber like. You see some knives in cutting competitions using barn mats.
