Best Hawkbill knife you know of........recommendation?

Hello,

I posted this question on two other knife forums and haven't gotten a single answer. I just recently found this forum and I've really liked it, so hopefully some folks on here can give me some help in the department. I know the knife that I'm looking for is somewhat specific, but there's got to be one out there. I just haven't found it yet. Please help me if you can!!!

What I'm looking for is a really high quality hawkbill........I like the looks and styling of the KaBar Maserin Side Lock #KM-241, but I prefer a longer blade length of at least 4.00" or so and I would also prefer either SAO or Auto, but that isn't absolutely a necessity if there aren't any really high quality hawkbill knives that fit that description. If it is not SAO or Auto, I'd prefer lockback over sidelock. The primary characteristic I need over anything else is a steel Comp/RH that holds a razor edge extremely well. Super durabilty isn't needed since it won't be used often, or for any extended or rugged/heavy duty cutting. It just needs to be EXTREMELY sharp when it is used.

I'm looking forward to see your recommendations. Pictures, prices, or dealer websites would be extremely helpful if you don't mind posting them. I really appreciate any information you can give. Everyone on this forum is so knowledgeable about knives and I really value your input. Thanks again for any help you can offer.

Welcome to the forums!

I like the Spyderco Tasman Salt, but that has a 3" blade. The Spyderco Superhawk should be coming out soon, I think that has close to a 4" blade. That's going to be a great knife. Both are lockbacks. They're plenty fast, you don't need AO. AO is kind of gimmicky, IMO. And it introduces a whole set of potential legal problems if you choose to carry.

Here's a link to Spyderco's website, and their Tasman Salt:

Thanks so much for your help! I do like Spyderco knives. I have a SS Endura that has always been a reliable knife.

I also agree that some lower quality AO knives are gimmicky and crappy, but when you get into the higher quality knives, that doesn't seem to be the case. I have a nice Microtech OTF and a Protech Godfather which I absolutely adore. They both have a very sturdy opening and perform well. I'm active duty military ( my Microtech was actually issued by my unit as a backup knife ) and also a certified paramedic, so I don't have any legal problems with carrying an AO. In fact, I show my knives to most officers I meet and they often want to know where they can get them.

Well, I'll be looking forward to seeing the new Spyderco when it comes out. Anyone else have recommendations?

I say the Spyderco Harpy or Tasman. You simply cannot go wrong with these. The Harpy is one of Spyderco's oldest unchanged models that is still around and that really says something. Keep on the lookout for the new Superhawk--> BIG blade, peel ply CF, VG-10, Full flat grind, PE, and compression lock.

Spyderco P'kal.
It's shorter than you wanted, BUT will get the job done.
I'm not sure what you mean by a side lock?
The p'kal has an Encased Ball Bearing lock that seems pretty cool.
And comes with a Wave ( Which I've found to be faster than any SAO That I own)

The p'kal is not at all like a hawkbill... it is a knife meant to be held in reverse grip

True. But is very comfortable in a standard grip as well. I use mine on day to day tasks using the saber grip and have no problems with it whatsoever.
