Is it wrong to ask a maker to use another makers heat treat? I want to have a knife built by a certain maker because only he can pull this knife off like it should but I don't think he is a master is cpm-154. Who do you think has the best heat treat of cpm-154? My personal favorite is Halfrich.

It's a pretty common steel for custom makers. I know many have raved about T. Bose's heat treat of 154cm, not sure if he uses the cpm version, or how different the treatment would be for it.

I wouldn't be afraid to discuss it with whomever you are working with. I do think most of the knife makers do a good job with it, or have it done by experienced heat treaters. I agree that Jerry's CPM-154 is up there with the best.

That being said Maintenance, Tinkering and Embellishment is probably a better place for this discussion. I'll move it there.

So, how about some numbers?
Steel thickness
Grind type
Thickness behind the edge
Steel hardness (very important)

I'm guessing this is for a traditional slip-joint knife?

Heat treating any steel is a matter of time @ a given temperature and quench speed followed by tempering. 154 CPM has a given recipe for what ever hardness you require. If the maker is skilled enough to make the blade he is surely skilled enough to heat treat it to whatever condition you require.

Shop Talk is where you'll find the knife makers.
