I'm heading there in a few weeks. I have been disappointed thus far in trying to find some good hiking. A lot of great reviews of trails ... and then I see how the reviewer said his 8 year old daughter had a great time. I prefer something a little more strenuous and out of the way.

I saw an old post on here about Flume Trail ... that is probably the best candidate so far.

Take the short drive out to the Badlands if you want a challenging hike. Just be aware that navigation is difficult and there is no water out there. Be very careful, but it is a strange and beautiful place.

I was lucky enough to be stationed at Ellsworth AFB, SD for 4 years. Gas was cheap 10+ years ago, so we used sightsee every weekend possible. We have done the Harney's Peak hike. It was the most well known scenic overlook and also the highest, I think. I wasn't a big hiker so I don't know how difficult it was compared to others. Because it is a big mountain there are a few entrances at separate locations. Each are different in difficulty and hike time. We did the Lake Sylvan route. The lake is very scenic and there was wildlife all around that area. I almost got ran over on a thin trail by a BIG male mountain goat that I had spooked. I think the lake trail was the easiest.

Can't head to badlands -- I'm only there for a weekend and it is too far. I would much prefer to go there though.

If anyone can refer me to a hike in THE BLACK HILLS (not in badlands, devil's tower, etc.), that would be very helpful.
