Hello Folks i just picked up a Smith & Wesson 4" model 29-2 and was wondering what holster you all carry yours in. I've got a cheapy nylon holster but the 29 just flops around in it, theres really not enough support i guess. I'm a lefty and was thinking about carrying it crossdraw.
Thanks Doug

I carry my 4"k frame in a 3 slot pancake style from simplyrugged.com . If you do a search you'll find these holsters highly rated,. The 3 slot allows for strong side or cross draw carry. I ordered mine with the removable inside the waistband straps, which gives you a concealed carry option also. I'm 100% satisfied.

I was looking at the Galco holster it looks pretty good with the crossdraw option. The simply rugged holsters look pretty cool too with several carry options. I guess i should join the Smith & Wesson forum being it won't let you really look at the different sites without logging in. The Ted Blocker holster looks pretty well built also and i know he's been making holsters for quite some time.
Thanks again fella'sfor the links and advice, Doug,

I have the Ruger Redhawk 4" .44 and use the Triple-K leather holster for it. I like their products - very well made and great price on them too directly from their website. I'm pretty sure they have the 4" model 29 style in stock, as I was asking them if that would work on my Ruger. I like the brown smooth leather versions, but their basketweave is nice too. I have a couple others that they make too.

Simply rugged (simplyrugged.com) pancake with a Chesty Puller conversion strap made by them are great. Carried my guns all over Alaska with one. This gives you the option of chest or belt carry. Diamond D Custom leather also makes some great chest holsters. Guides choice by them is hard to beat. diamonddcustomleather.com

Yes it's used about 90% but still in excellent condition mostly just a little blue wear. It was made in the early 60's i got it from a friend for 450.00 its one of the first dash-2-29's. I have'nt got out to shoot it yet but he said it shoots very good better than his newer 29's.The older 29's are'nt cheap anymore if this gun was mint in box it would be over a grand right now. I just wanted a user and this ones perfect for using.
Hope this helps.

Hey Doug, I'd suggest you shoot that one a bit before carrying it into 'bad animal' country - my 629-3 4" would occasionally unlock under recoil, with the cylinder ending up in a 'maybe' condition. John Taffin (I believe) did a pretty comprehensive review on the models affected a few years back...something worth looking into, but even then, shoot it with light, hot, and carry loads until you're sure it works right... Shel

Yes Melvin i've got a few big bore books and have read a lot of Taffin's articles on big bores over the years. I kind of wish i would have kept my 629 classic it really shot great and had the upgrades that smith came up with. Maybe i'll just look for another. I do have a ruger bisley though that i'm looking at pretty hard. Thanks all for the great suggestions i'm looking at getting the galco i think right now.

Never heard of a 29 or 629 coming unlocked during recoil..assuming no thumb on the cylinder release. Did have an ejector rod housing shoot loose/off of a .44 mag Vacquero..went back and blue Loctited all my Ruger C/F SA..no problems since then.

Interesting..every day does have a teachable moment.

I used to carry my 629 6" in a SafariLand cross draw while rifle hunting....gave it up, wasn't willing to hump the extra weight for the few handgun shots. You'll want/need a good gun BELT - I like Galco Contour and The Beltman.com, both with stiffeners.
