Best Hone for Straight Razor

I have been getting antique razor hones from ebay. Some of these are made of material that you just can't find any more. I like my Franz Swaty particularly well.

The other good choice is to use an 8000 grit japanese water stone. This does a real nice job rather quickly.

You should only hone when stropping won't restore your shaving edge. Be careful not to hone too much since straight razors are extremely prone to developing an edge burr. Removing this burr requires honing at an extreme angle for a few strokes and then puting your shaving edge back on. You can chase your tail if you hone too much.

I got my razor hones many years ago at specialized shops for barbers, my good one is a two sided dubl duck, I also have one apparently German with no brand name, but the dubl duck is better. haven´t seen any in a long time (haven´t used my straight razors either).
