hi ,just want to buy a reallygood knife, never thought things would be so involved but here i am.i need a knife solely for skinning ,field dressing and probably most of the meat cutting up excercise.would be cutting somewhere around 2 to 6 deer most weekends during the winter time .i had considered buck vanguard in s30v, but cant seem to find one.then i read good and bad reports on that steel .i liked the design of the buck so you guys have some sort of picture of my needs.regards from Aus .

2 to 6 deer is a lot of meet. You really can't lose with the Buck. There is the Cold Steel Master Hunter too.

Two other choices you might want to look into:

Bark River Classic Lite Hunter, very good and safe user indeed.

A cheap knife I think very highly of Marttiini Martef Skinner. PERFECT ergonomics, very practical safe handle and a quality sheath too. Fantastic Jack-of all-trades blade but it's a master too!

I use more than one knife. I only carry folders in the field. Whatever suits your hand will work fine for field dressing and skinning. I find little advantage with "Skinners" over any other knife, although I have several - all in camp. When it comes to butchering, I use two boning knives, one rigid and one flexible (I bone out deer completely) and a larger butcher knife for slicing steaks and dealing with large cuts of meat.
Certainly all this could be done with one knife, but I would be much faster with knives suited for each separate task. I also find it hard on my hands and wrists using a knife not designed for its use.

Or you could try to save up for the ultimate hunting knives (IMHO), by Ed Fowler. You are not gonna regret it.

thanks guys, yeah tis a bit of meat, not all on my own, nothing wasted though.thanks again

very cool!

how would you like a Tramontina curved skinner with rosewood scales? needs a sheath, but yours for the price of postage!

first up is a TRAMONTINA "Arizona" curved skinner, 440 ss, rosewood and brass handle

Its an upswept blade, 5.5" long, 1.1" tall., 9" overall length, with finger grooves on the spine. Handle is manmade rosewood/epoxy and is designed for wet environments. 3 flush brass pins. Knife has been used about 10- times for woodshavings and sammich cutting. Knife is very tough and solid.

its the TOP knife in this pic:

Fallkniven F1, Dozier K2, CS Master Hunter, Marble's Campcraft, Roselli erapukko, will all do the job.

now im getting pissed off,im not really computer literate, just wrote a soppy thank you all for your replies then found i could not send as i had dropped out from service .so here we go again .thanks for all advice ,i was quite taken by the offer of a knife just for the postage ,but i wont take you up on the offer ,will check all knives out that have been suggested but am leaning towards the vanguard at this stage. may end up with several ,if only i lived in USA knives seem so cheap over there ,will visit one day . now i also need to look at price ,postage ,reputable dealer etc, etc , all for a knife ,damn good thing im not buying a woman . ok guys thanks again will visit again after work tomorrow ,tis now 7 pm monday , cheers .

That was a darn nice gesture, Bushman5! You're aces in my book, Sir! I just wish we could still give reputation points, as you'd definitely have some coming your way.;)

I have been using a Buck fixed blade for years, can't remember the model though, I don't think its the 119, but the same style, I think the 119 is the 5 inch balde, and the one I use is the 4" Woodsman or something maybe?

It is aa great knife for gutting and skinning, but leaves something to be desired when you get into actually processing the deer. Like somebody else said though, usually for that I think its better to use a few knives, each one better suited to the actual task.

I have been thinking about upgrading to something else though, and I really like CRK hollow handled knives. I am thinking about on of the 4" blade ones. Shadow III or Aviator. Not really sure yet.

Chris Reeve Ubejane.

my hunting skinning knife is a Sable III, but my brother just got an Ubejane recently and he loves it.. They are great skinning knives and super sharp..

For that amount of deer you need more than 1 knife. For dressing, skinning a good 4" drop point .Many available from my old AUS-8 CS Master Hunter to Fallkniven F-1 etc...For butchering I use a Dexter-Russell 5" stainless steel stiff boning knife , a 10" butchers knife and a 18 to 21 " butchers saw. These three items are commercial type tools. A butchers steel is needed also, 10-12".

ok ,so now im looking for 3,4, maybe 5 knives ,phew, no thats cool.i can see the importance of more than one knife, and i do appreciate everyones input .i am looking more into the s30 v steel vanguard from cabelas ,there is also an importer looking at same, will see what dollars are best spent where.that may be my skinner then will look at others ,thanks again fellas ,and bushman5 ,i owe you a beer.sqiurrel.i know should be squirrel ,oh well..
