All,

What is the best of pre-ban elephant and mammoth / mastodon ivory, and why? I tend to think mammoth / mastodon is better if you ever plan to carry the knife to another country. What about esthetics?

Also, what about walrus?

BTW, I'm referring to white / cream ivory blocks.

Thanks,

JD

Nothing is as nice as elephant ivory.

It is not illegal, only illegal to import. There is still a LOT floating around in this country.

Anyone heard what's become of the lifted ban? After the first notice, I haven't heard anything more about it. It'd sure be great to start seeing some nice ivory...

It seems it's still happening, at least to some extent. Was reading an article yesterday that claimed, as people had worried when UN did decide to let certain countries sell their stockpiles, that poaching of elephants is way up, now that poachers can have a hope of selling the ivory "legally." Mentionted some, in Uganda I think, that had poached elephants, left the carcasses to rot, and burned the tusks out with acid, as it was faster than cutting out the normal way and they didn't want to get caught. Supposedly a pretty gruesome scene. But according to that article, and others I'd read, the UN is still letting the countries sell their ivory stockpiles.

Tom,

Thanks. Being a foreigner living in the US, I must take into consideration the fact that I might want to one day bring back my collection to Europe - and my understanding is that I can't do that w/ elephant ivory, even fully documented.

So, what's best, mastodon, or walrus?

Anything that is fossalised is ok to transport. Mammoth, walrus, mastadon, ect. It all comes down to what you like, each has it's own colors and textures.
