What is the best Kershaw in your opinion for carry for self defense?
How does it rate for being concealable?

I'm looking for a recommendation for myself with jeans.

I am also thinking about getting the pink Leek for my wife. Any other
recommendations for purse carry for a lady?

Thanks for your input.

I carry both a full-sized Cyclone, as well as a "Mini"-Cyclone. Both are comfortable to carry.

A pink Leek would be an excellent choice for woman's purse-carry.

In a self defense situation you have to consider a bloody knife.....in that I mean you need something that you have a firm grip on when fluids are involved. For a small knife I would say a G10 Leek...for a larger knife, the ZT 0400. That's just MHO.

I agree with G-Man on the pink Leek for your wife.

Also note that if you're going to be using it for self defense, good training
would be highly advisable....

Cyclones (full size or mini) or a Groove or ENER-G for me, and the wife has a Mini Mojo and a Black/Gold Scallion (the Mojo's clipped, tip-up, in her jeans pocket and the Scallion is clipped inside her purse, right next to her .38 Lady Smith)...gotta love Kentucky mountain women and a "right to carry" state!

Good thread. I've really been looking closely at getting my first kershaw. I'm on the fence between a leek, mini-cyclone, and the Ken Onion Centofante. I not necessarily interested in them for self-defense. Just looking to try out a Kershaw.

I like the Leek, ZDP Cyclone, and JYD II.

But for self-defense, get some OC spray or a baton. Unless you are trained for self-defense with a knife, don't do it.

Looking for speed assist with ambidextrous opening that I can carry with jeans. Are any of these knives to big or thick to carry in jeans? I have looked at the following knifes and would ask you to comment on each:

Tatical Blur
Clyclone
Mini Clyclone
Leek
Blur
Need Work

Thanks for your input.

It seems to me that the knife that would meet your needs in the most comfortable package, given the restraints, would be the Spec Bump. It is a good size, rides decent in the back of the pocket, and feels great in a reverse grip. That being said, I'm gonna have to go with kindred spirits. If you find your self in a place where you need a SD tool a can of pepper spray and a strong sense of flight will probably serve you better than a knife.

Agreed. If you have the option to run.......run like hell.
Even if you survive/get the better of the other person,
you could still be injured severely. I still would say you need
training before attempting to use a knife for self defense.

Not one of those 1 week courses either. Throughly trained.

I should add to my post that I'm 49 year old. I do have enough sense to avoid tenuous situations. I do agree that a knife would be a last ditch weapon. So I carry a spyderco Caly 3 because its light and thin. I also don't advertise my carry by clipping it to my pocket. It resides in my pocket and it would only come out in a life or death situation.

+1 on Pepper spray I also carry it in my car. I do appreciate posters concerns about thinking that person carrying a knife might make someone feel like Rambo or more invincible than they are.

Thank you for your input.

I was also carrying an Emerson Super CQC-7 and I made the switch to the ZT 302. I would recommend the ZT series, they are flawless. Thanks, Jason

The ZT 0400 is worth having a look at. Its one of my regular EDCs and is a great knife in my opinion.

+1 on the Spec Bump. The stud lock is totally ambidextrous.
If you want lower profile for jeans, you might try to find an aluminum handled Speed Bump (1595ALBLK). It has a bead blasted 13C26 blade instead of the Black Tungsten DLC S30V blade of the Spec Bump (and is priced accordingly).

The Zero Tolerance 0400 (Scavenger) is pretty cool. Great knife for self Defense I guess. The best self defense is in Prevention. Keep yourself out of dangerous situations and you shouldn't need a knife for protection.

I even took pics of the clip side! ;)

I don't have giant OGRE hands like offsetlover, but they can palm a basketball pretty easily.

I always have to include that last picture--JUST FOR SCALE OF COURSE!

I've been carrying a Spec Bump for a few weeks now,......and just today my ZT 0200 arrived and i belive i'll give up the assisted opener for the heavier built ZT 0200. If i ever need the knife to defend myself with,........i feel more confident of the lockup on the ZT.

For what it's worth,......i hated the too long clip on the Spec Bump,.....and shortened it up about half it's length to where it's much less obtrusive. The ZT 0200 comes with a more manageable sized clip.

As i don't like to advertize my EDC piece,........wearing it clipped to my pocket was too noticable, and might freak some out or subject you to additional scrutiny from law enforcement.

So i found a recommendation on one thread somewhere that has worked really well! I now carry the knife inside my pants with the clip attached to my pant "lip",.......and my leather belt covers the clip. Angle the knife a bit pointing to,.....ummm,.....your manhood,.....and it's much better that way while sitting.

A slight pull of your shirt to create a little flap will completely cover the very top of the knife that might show otherwise,....and it's totally hidden and quite comfortable to wear this way,......even while sitting. I keep mine off to the right side pretty much over where my pocket is located. Since these knives are black in color,......a black shirt works best for making the knife dissappear.

The other reason i shortened up the too long clip on the Spec Bump was because when i carried this way,......the point of the clip still showed below my belt,......because it was longer than my belt was wide.

Kershaw,......if you're listening,.........make the Spec Bump clip more like the ZT 0200 in size!

If Kershaw made a larger Needs Work than that would make an amazing EDC as well a SD piece. My Needs work works out quite a bit from day to day.

Carried one of these clipped to the watch pocket in my black jeans. The color of the knife blends pretty well with faded washed black "Levi" type work jeans ( pretty much all I ever wear). I did have to check around to find the deepest watch pocket possible ( currently Wranglers) - but this is a big enough knife to be a useful tool - not so expensive that loosing one is a real tragedy -great cutting edge geometry -a tough enough tip that it compares to a Tanto (IMO) - so you're not going to be breaking the tip off at all easily ( my personal stupid specility). This also leaves the knife reliabily at hand and if you are using it regularly - you will develop the kind of muscle memory that makes the use of any tool more effecient - especially under stress.
Damm - after all that I might just go back to one - ordered a mini-cyclone 1636 simply to see if the slightlly smaller size would do the trick.
BTW - you'll notice that everyone who has had contact with Kershaw customer service is basically blown away - these folks sell very good products over a amazingly broad price range and back 'em to the hilt and beyond.

I'm a big fan of the TiZDP Leek - it's very thin and light - and I find the Ti handle to be very comfortable in the hand - much more so than I expected after owning other Leeks (and lots of other brands/models). It's also a 3" blade - so legal in those states that have blade length restrictions. I also like the non-threatening look of this model, i.e. not tactical looking......

I am rather fond of the carbon damascus Leek personally.
