Hi Guys,

I just received my first Kukri a KLVUK and really like it.

My question is do you keep the convex edge or do you re-profile it with a secondary bevel. What are the pros and cons?

What do you like?

Thanks,

Geoff

Keep it convex-no question. A secondary on a convex cuts very badly, compared to full convex.
I give mine a very gentle tuneup in the field with a ceramic rod, but that's more on the order of steeling it than sharpening.

I keep all my khuks full convex absolutely.

Just as JW stated.

I feel that the full convex is stronger, holds the edge better, easier to sharpen and maintain in the field.

Just my 2 cents.

Customer of mine, who had me make him a heavy duty, full convex bowie, had a "professional sharpener" put a secondary on it-neither of them understood the convex thing. Went from cutting a full tatami mat pretty easily to being able to shave, but not cut at all.
Took me 20 minutes to fix, too...

Perfect example JW. There is a huge difference between being sharp and being able to cut.

Convex is my vote! Mousepad and 600 grit is fine for my needs. I as well like ceramic rods for touch up.

Just a word to the wise......
The convex edge should be maintained as closely as possible to the original.
Improper sharpening by hand or the use of power tools is not a manufacturing defect and is not a warranty issue.
Changing the geometry, thinning of the cutting edge, V-grinding and secondary bevels are non warrantable alterations.

The HI Limited Lifetime Warranty said:
Modification of any blade/blade edge to an extent that it becomes unstable or unsuitable for the purpose for which it was intended.

I just touch mine up on some sandpaper and a finish on a loaded strop. So yeah, convex:)
