hey guys im looking for a rust resistant fixed blade, 3- 5 ", i carried an izula as my water knife for a while, but recently lost it on my last outting  it was water resistant until the coating wore off then it rusted in those spots so im looking for something different. id like a spyderco aqua salt. but can only find one for sale and its $140, not looking to spend that much. all your opinions on what would be a good knive for that purpose would be apreceated! looking to carry on my leg/ ankle cause im mostly in board shorts, other carry options when in board shorts also appreceated! also made in USA prefered! guess not manditory considering the options and $ and no serrations unless its 2 sided. thanks guys!

This is going to be a painfully dull response, but I do a ton of diving and I don't carry an expensive knife at all. I get aggressively serrated steak knives and grind them off to about a 2" blade and carry them in a sheath. You can reuse a mini mag light sheath. You don't want something that is going to make you strongly tempted to swim after it if you accidentally drop it. Most of what you'll run into that needs cutting is fishing line or netting. Aggressive serrations will zip right through it, turning what could be a problem into a minor inconvenience. The steak knives will definitely rust, but at < $2 each, just throw it out and start over.

Does it have to be a fixed blade?

I ask because they seem a lot easier to lose in the water than a thin, light folder clipped to webbing or a pocket.

I would (and do) use a Spyderco Salt folder. If I did fastwater stuff, I'd have a Maxpedition Gear Retractor attached to it.
