My husband wants a knife for Christmas and I simply have no idea of which one to get. Hopefully someone here can/will help me. We live in Southern California. He spear fishes and goes diving. The kelp has been a real problem this year. One web site says Ocean Master Beta is the best and another says it's not. So, maybe you can make his Christmas a little brighter and help me get the best one. You would also brighten my day if you know of an affordable place to buy it online. Thanks in advance.

Hello Cosmod,

Welcome to BF!

I have never heard of Ocean Master but I doubt they are "the best"...especially when there are custom (hand-made) and semi-custom options out there...do you have a budget in mind? At the high end of the spectrun (e.g. $500+) you might want to look at customs like the Mad Dog DSU or Carson U2..at the mid-level, you might want to look at semi-customs like my Strider BD (pictured below...$450) or the titanium Mission knives (approx $300)...if budget is a big concern, you might want to get the production version (machine-made) of the Carson, the Buck Intrepid

Hi!

My advices on choosing a good spear-hunting knife are:

Don't spend more than $40 and chose a diving brand since you'll find a really good diving knifes at that price and most of diving brand knives are the fruit of the interaction between experienced spear-hunters and the designers.

Don't buy a tip beveld knive since the main pourpose of a spear hunting knife is to kill the fish so it must have a pointed tip.

It sould have both sides of the blade edged and one of the sides should be serrated.

The best blade shape is the spearpoint blade

It souldn't be longer than 7-8''

Before buying it put it in the sheath, grab the sheath and balance your arm, if you can hear the blade balancing inside the sheath don´t buy it because it will be a source of noise.

For me, one of the best ones is the Sporasub H. Dessault.

Hi again!

The name of the model I suggested is the "snake"!

To see it try www.sporasub.com in the "nos produits" and then in the "couteux" section it's the one with the green handle.

Merry Chistmas!!!

By the way! The probability of loosing a diving knife is really big so DON'T BUY ANYTHING EXPENSIVE...
Don't comit the mistake of buying a custom diving knife it won't be much better than a brand knife and it will hurt when one looses it.
$40 in more than enough and so you can add some other diving equipment such as a speargun or a mask (Try the newest model of cressi-sub it really increases one's observing field).
you can see it here www.cresisub.com
