Best knife for Horizontal Carry?

I was looking for a new knife, I've always liked neck knives. The thing is I have always wanted a good knife for Horizontal carry. Since most neck knifes have decent kydex sheaths and pre-drilled holes. I figured I'd just pick up a Blade-tech tek lock and be good to go. The only problem is, I'm on the fence about which knife would be the best. The thing I don't want is a big sheath hanging off my belt. Some of the knives I'm deciding between..

1. KA -Bar Becker Necker

2. Rat Izula

3. Benchmade Instigator

4. BokerPlus Plus Chad MPT

If anyone knows any other choices, let me know. Thanks...

The Becker & Rats are better quality knives than the other 2, IMHO. Not that the other 2 are bad, but I believe they're in SS, while the 2 U.S. made knives are in 1095.

I'd probably go with the RAT of the 4, just because the current Becker's sheath isn't terribly small. However, if you could find a Camillus made BK11, that would work, too, as their sheath was leaner.

There's definitely other choices, but it depends on how much $ you want to spend & how big/small of a blade.

A HAK (HideAwayKnife) or Spyderco Swick (I have both) come to mind as good choices, but their blades are small.

Agreed you can't go wrong with a hide away knife or a swick. But if I had to choose one out of the four you picked, I'd buy both, the Bk11 and Izula.I'd start with the Bk11,then get the Izula down the road.
Both are great knives,
but IMHO the BK11 could take more of a beating, then the Izula.

I like the design of the HAK/HindAwayKnife but I think it will be too small in the hand, and the grip is alittle awkward.

The Spyderco Kumo should be added to list. If one were to have a nice little leather sheath made for it, it would be almost perfect IMO.

I am currently looking at the Becker myself, so I can't provide an opinion on it specifically for horizontal carry, but I have been carrying this little skinner everyday for a couple months and love it. I don't carry cross-draw, I carry it above my right, front pocket. It is real comfortable, both sitting and standing, you can forget it is there...

I have a custom version of the BM Instigator and I think it's a great design. I would go with that or the RAT Izula.

Bro,

That is definitely not my tattoo, although I do consider it my territory....;)

A couple of weeks ago I saw a dude at the beach with one on his back. I was hoping that this wasn't becoming a trend:thumbup:

Try some of the smaller blades by Bob Dozier, he makes an excellent horizontal kydex sheath.

I pocket carry my Izula, but my manager horizontal carries his with great success. The RAT I carry horizontally is the larger RC-3 (when it's not on my pack) The MOLLE locks work great. :)

As I said earlier, I gave my opinion of the 4 the OP asked about & threw in 2 that I've carried.

However, I have to agree with "abcdef" on that neat little file knife made by "mykulmorris." He makes some nice file knives (Very tough knives that are made for work) with some nice kydex holsters of different carry modes & very reasonable prices, IMHO. I believe he makes one that clips in a pocket like a folder & the one in that link. He's also a great guy to talk to & email.

Just a thought, for comfort, I agree with horizontal comfort. If you're looking for something that's quick to get to, if needed, it's hard to beat a knife in the upside down or slanted down mode. Many times in training excercises (Force on force), it can be hard to get to the knife quickly, even on horizontal carry. The quickest set-up, if not in your pocket where your hand might be, seems to be somewhere in the appendix area & able to draw downward.

Of course, the OP did not specifically state the goal was for SD, so in that case, I would definitely think that horizontal carry is the way to go.

Good luck with whatever you get.

+1

If you want the "best," in a complete package, look long and hard at Dozier's knives. A good many of his knives are sheathed horizontal as standard, even the big ones like the "Professional Guides Knife".

There are a lot of sheath makers to be found in the Sheaths & Such forum that can build a sheath around any knife you decide on. Decide what your perfect and "best" for you knife is and ask around.

A little Dozier....
