What is the best knife sharpener and what is a good book or DVD to get, that talks about angles how to sharpen all kinds of knives? If this is already been discussed please direct me to the thread.

The Complete Guide To Sharpening by Leonard Lee. This book covers many tools including knives. The Spyderco Sharpmaker and documentation is the best IMO.

apex edge pro for me.

more labor intensive, but also more precise than the spyderco.

Apex EdgePro!

Setting new bevel is much much more effortless then a sharpmaker.

My ZDP WH did take me 15 min what the sharpmaker couldn't fix in a few hours.

Spend the extramoney, you will end up with an edgepro in the end anyway.

The lansky sharpening system is an inexpensive, easy and efficient way to sharpen.
I was issued my first knife 9 1/2 years ago in the military and it was frequently abused and submerged in the ocean, after my first failed knife inspection my proctor recommended this sharpening system. The consistent razor like edge I presented resolved it.
It still accompanies me on all my adventures.

Hope this helps.

Amazon.com has two books Razor Edge Book of Sharpening and The Complete Guide to Sharpening. The reviews criticize the first book as being "old" and the second appears to focus on woodworking. Anyone have comments on these books?

Zeasor--

My link above is to The Razor Edge Book Of Sharpening. I haven't read every sharpening book out there, or tried every sharpening method, but I tried quite a few. Over time, I was getting discouraged and frustrated with not getting the knife edges I wanted by freehand sharpening. When I read this book and used their hones (they also sell sharpening guides, which I don't use) I finally got the edges I wanted, and stopped looking.

I also read where the book is "old", as if sharpening theory and methods that work change as fast as computers, media players, and other electronics. People have been sharpening cutting edges for tens of thousands of years. This isn't exactly new technology that needs to be updated every few days. If the edges I'm getting are "wrong" because the book is "old", then in his case I'm very happy to be wrong.

I highly recommend this book.
