Hi guys,

What are some of your opinions on the best knife sharpener? I have a couple stone sharpeners from KnifeArt.com that work pretty well, and a Firestone ceramic sharpener that I LOVE.

The Firestone is really good for quick sharpenings

What ones do you use??

You're going to get 1,029,203,237 replies saying the Spyderco Sharpmaker...

I haven't used a Sharpmaker but I'm starting to want one.

I use Crock Sticks, similar to a Sharpmaker, but round rods.

sharpmaker

ok really I think it's ceramic bench stones as they don't limit the angles and are a joy to use. I got a sharpmaker for less then a fine bench stone though and it does well

the sharpmaker is great for our lazy times when people wont spend the time to learn how to sharpen free hand. That's why I don't like it. The reason I like it is I can't be botherd to get to use benchstones as the sharpmaker is quicker

Good equipment won't compensate for lack of skill, but having the good stuff does help if you know what you're doing. I like the Edge Pro myself. You can get a knife just as sharp freehand as you can with the Edge Pro if you know what you're doing, but I like the clean, even bevels I get using the system.

Even though everyone will tell you the Sharpmaker...I was pretty underwhelmed with mine. I'm probably too impatient.

What I did buy, which is about 4 times the price of the Sharpmaker is the Edge Pro Apex which really gets the job done nicely. I then follow up with the Sharpmaker at either 30 degrees or 40 degrees, depending on how I reprofiled with the Edge Pro. I think the Sharpmaker will be great for touchups, but not for a severely dulled knife or one that you wish to reprofile.

I had previously used a set of Cardboard Wheels, one gritted the other for finishing with what I always thought were great results. As I had an extra grinder, I probably spent $ 40 on the wheels. Then I started reading this forum and everyone seems to hate the wheels for fear of taking the temper out of the blade. I don't think that in 4 years of using them, I ever experienced that problem and the very quickly put a hell of an edge on a knife.

The sharpmaker is a V-type similar to a crock stick setup, but uses triangular stones which are much more versatile (does a great job on serrations.)

Quick story on serrations, I have an OT 890T with wavy blade. The serrated, or wavy blade had serrations ground in at >25 degrees. I used the sharpmaker and the corners of the diamond rods, to re-grind them to 20 degrees (40 sharpmaker), using only pull strokes. Took a great deal of steel off, but maintained the serrations through the process. I was impressed.

I think the basic sharpmaker will take care of your blades just fine at around 40.00. BUT it is slow, so if you need a lot of material removed, you need something else or the expensive diamond V-rods for the sharpmaker.
The sharpmaker also only gives you two degree options (more if you put something under the base though).

I have used a lansky and I did not like it.

Edge Pro is a favorite around here, and you CAN do big material-removal jobs with it (like changing the angle of a blade from 20 to 15 etc. )

That EdgePro Apex is probably the best system I've seen, and this guy seems to think so and thus offers it at a pretty good deal:

I've got a DMT DuoSharp (8" x 2 5/8") in R/G (Fine/Extra Fine) that really works well. The Fine side can reshape an edge of AUS8 steel given time. Really nice stuff. Gotta work on my bevel-holding skills, though. Not quite perfect grind yet.
