So, what is the best knife...FMTPO

Best knife? The one that causes your child's or grandchild's eyes to widen in disbelief when he/she receives it as their first!

The one I just bought.

I get some pleasure from finding a relentlessly peaceful use for a combative looking knife.

Got to agree with Sig, it's the one in your hand

I asked a similar question in Scotland one time.

Me to young man, "Do you have a favorite pub?"

Young man, "Yeah, the closest one."

I got into this very discussion with my best friend who just moved to Michigan. He has an extensive collection of Emerson and Microtech, probably over 200 knives, and he's always on the look out for 'spares' and recent inventions. He had read my posts on the Ka-Bar Hobo, a knife I think is quite useful and which doesn't get a lot of respect.
I mentioned that on some weekends, my Microtech remains totally unused and clipped to my pocket, while my Hobo does repairs, prepares and serves food, and is loaned out to my wife and close friends--and it is the one knife I will loan to a buddy--a good buddy.
Sure, I have to touch it up more than the rest of my collection, but that's easy; with a fresh edge, it cuts like anything else. And using an implement repeatedly developes it's own kharma.
I have MT's I never touch, but I'd miss that little Hobo...--OKG

Didnt you just know that most of the answers that you got would be smart a**.
The best knife as far as I'm concerned is a Kit Carson M16 A1 with Stellite blade, flipper, titanium bolster, and carbon fibre handle, but I'm sure everyone else would beg to differ.

Going with what I own, I would have to say my Dozier general utility. It does all I ask of it and never complains, holds an edge for what seems like forever and never gets uncomfortable in the hand.
My Second pick falls on my CR Shadow IV.

FMTPO = For My Teenage Pregnant Otter

James, for your teenage pregnant otter, I would recommend a fairly small knife (otters have small hands) that will resist rust very well, and will be usefull in prying open clams & oysters. With these specifications in mind, I would probably recommend a small Sebenza or Umfaan, depending on the size of your otter's hands. The Ti handles are good because they won't rust in salt water, and are easy to keep clean. Wood inlays and damascus blades are not recommended for otters (as stated in the CRK faq). You will want to heavily coat the blade with marine tuff-cloth or something stronger, and do this frequently (it's the least you can do for a teenage pregnant otter). You'll probably want to remove the pocket clip, since otters don't have pockets, and you'll definitely want to keep the lanyard since it will be used around water. A nice addition might be a collar or bracelet, firmly attatched to the otter and the lanyard, so she definitely won't drop it.

[edit: on second thought, if you could get a CPM420V blade made for it that would be even better. I'm not sure how well a Ti or Talonite blade would hold up to that kind of prying with the tip & edge.]

(I really don't know why so many people don't think a Sebenza would be a good idea, my otter loves hers

Congratulations on your otter's pregnancy, James, and happy holidays

Nice try, but no cigar. (No Tom, this is not an excuse to take a break and fire up a stogie!)

I'll tell you what, it isn't a Sebenza and I hope it isn't the one in your hand. That would be very nasty

Seriously, if that is not grossly innappropriate here,

the notion of a best knife is really a non-starter. There are so many great knives being made out there, both for specialized jobs and for versatility, and the differences between them are so subjective, that it really doesn't pay to think in terms of which one is best. I have alsways tried to put my knife preferences in terms of what it is about a particular knife that I like or don't like. I like to put things in completely subjective terms so that the question of objectivity never even comes up, like: here's the one I like, and here's why, rather than, this one is the best.

Uhm, G2, I think the handle on your knife is broken. If you just got it today, I would send it back. And Tom, there's holes in that knife you'd give your Terrible Parole Officer. That definitely get you sent back to the clink. Geez, what is up with you people and your broken knives?

Well, I was thinking about something appropriate for making three parrot omeletes, and a nice hawskbill -- perhaps one of Neil Blackwood's creations -- would probably do the trick.

Of course, if we're thinking about something for old Mackie MacHeath, the same answer applies.
