Best Kukris on the market?

I was wanting to get a good quality Kukri and I wanted to hear of some options. I was thinking of Cold Steel's Gurka Kukri, as well as maybe Himilayan Imports. Are there any others on the market? I'm leaning towards CS's Gurka Kukri as it comes in VG-1 San Mai(is this as good as S30V?) and I want to use it as a outdooring blade for heavy chopping and defense. I will probably handle the blade a lot too, so rust resistance is nice. Thanks. :)

Go on over to the Himilayan Imports forum. You will find a lot of information about khukri styles and use as well as great HI khukris for sale.

Yep, wander around the HI forum for a while, unless your heart is absolutely set on the Cold Steel. :p

The VG10 won't hold an edge as long as S30V, but it will be easier to sharpen. I don't have any experience with the San Mai configuration from Cold Steel.

The San Mai Khukri lists on their website for $599. Even if you get a few hundred dollars discount, you could get several HI Khukuris or maybe a custom for the same price. Plus, the three sites I checked didn't have any in stock. I didn't search very hard, but if you're in the states you can probably have an HI in your hands within a week.

Plusses for HI - you'll get a thicker, heavier blade that is good for heavy chopping and other work. You'll have a much, much wider range of models to choose from, everything from pretty to pretty ugly, but they'll all get the job done.

Minuses for HI - It's not a production knife, and it's not made in a modern shop, so fit and finish can range from very good to mediocre, depending on the particular knife and your pickiness. (I love HI, but this is my standard disclaimer. There are some people who can find ten faults with their new-from-the-factory Sebenza. If this bugs you and you're not willing to get out a stone or file and tweak the knife, then khukuris may not be for you.) The high side of that is that you can make adjustments until the knife is perfect for you.

Now mosey over to the HI forum and start reading. I recommend you dig up some of the ubiquitous "which khukuri should I get" threads, and look at Yangdu's deal threads. If you don't have the patience for that, just order a 16" Ang Khola and prepare to be amazed.

Honestly head over to HI. For the money that you would spend on that one Cold Steel you caould start a nice collection of HI's. Remember these guys invented the Khukri;)

I would suggest as others have that you check out the HI section and check out what a real Khukuri is all about.
Himalayan Imports
Tora
Khukuri House
These are all places that sell true Nepalese made khuks. Personally, I would not waste lots of hard earned money on a fancy sai-mai khuk like object from Cold Steel. Get a real hand made khukuri and feel the magic of a khukuri made by people that use them daily for their normal lives. No stamped out production perfection. Just true old word craftsmanship and an understanding of what a khukuri is meant to be.

What engineers learn:

If two materials are as good for the same task, choose the cheapest.

Recycled leaf spring or expensive super steel?

I've read a lot of reviews, and I finally chose HI.

I was given a Khukuri by a Nepalese friend while working in remote Indonesia. They are excellent for what they ae made for. I second the notion of getting an original.

Hi, try visiting this site khukuriblades.com. This site is by Khukuri house Thamel from kathmandu, Nepal. I've bought two from this house and it works like magic. Nothing chops better than kukris made from this house. Try'em out.

Your a dirty liar, your employed by them as a spammer!

the himalayan imports khukuris are the best khukuris I have ever tried. The edge on these khukuris is better and lasts longer than many others I have tried that turn into serrated blades after some chopping.

Himalayan Imports! You will not find better khukuris in the market and they are great people.

Better, worse, not as good as.....it all depends on the application. There pretty much nothing better out there for a dedicated chopping tool like a Khurki than some pretty basic HC steel. Something like 5160 for example (which is a spring steel btw.). A shock steel would probably work well, too.
