Best large fixed under $100?

I have a Becker BK-7 and that's sort of what I'm looking for except I REALLY HATE the handle. It's kind of like trying to cut something while holding onto a doorknob.

I've considered the Cold Steel Recon Scout, but it's a little small. I have other knives to fill my smaller-knife needs. I'm looking for a good, tough, LARGER knife for under $100 like the BK-7 except with a COMFORTABLE HANDLE.

(And don't tell me about the guy who sells smaller G10 handles for them because they still have basically the same, bad, geometry.

I'm looking for a 7"-blade knife. (Give or take .5)

I prefer flat-ground and clip-point, but that's negotiable.

What do you think?
Something from Cold Steel?
SOG?
Buck General?

I don't know. Give me some options. I'll probably trade the BK-7 for something else. It's LNIB.

You can probably pick up something from John Greco for that price.
I'm fairly fine with the handle.

Check out some of the leukus at Ragweed Forge. I don't know if it's what you're looking for, but they're very nice.
The Fallkniven A1 isn't quite that big, and slightly over $100, but a lot of people love it.

You might take a look at some Spainish knives like Aitor or Muela for a big, good value under 100.

I went into the knife store looking for a big "beater" fixed blade with a low price. I was checking out the Kabars but I could see a gap between the blade and the guard. Then the salesman said "try this" and put a big Muela bowie with a Kraton handle into my hand. Nice squishy modled kraton, big thick tang, 7.5" 440C steel blade in .20"+ stock. Mine has spine serrations but thier are aparently tons of configurations of this model.

It was 45 bucks!

It is a Muela Mirage. Definately worth the $$ surprisingly solid, heavy knife with a really comfy grip.

If you can find a SOG Tigershark under 100 that would make you very happy and ebay has a couple just slightly under right now. You can also ask Ron if he has a second lying around and get that at 40% off. That is a monster man-eating fixed blade with a comfy Kraton grip amd a nice 9" long .25" thick blade. The smaller SEAL SOGs have hard Zytel handels...not bad, but not cushioned.

Maybe one of the exotic Bowies from Valiant Co. http://www.valiantco.com/

Smaller selections may be a Swamp-Rat Bandicoot or Howlin Rat. But you want big 7". Springing an extra 30 bucks on your budget would get you a Camp Tramp, that would fit your criteria nicely. http://www.swamprat.com/knives.html

Greco is a good choic too.:)

Hey, I'm starting to look at the Cold Steel Carbon V Trail Master. I can get one for $100 (give or take). It's a little large, but it could be fun to have a knife that large. What do you think?

Definitely buy the Kabar #1281 with the Eagle sheath. Kabar just had a price reduction on it. You can pick one up for under a $100.00 street price now. It come with D2 steel, a lifetime warranty(the Spanish knives don't) and the best sheath on the market.

There are a number of HI khukuri knives available in that price range. They are excellent hand made work knives forged the traditional way by craftsmen with decades of experience. For under $100 you can get a massive knife nearly 1/2" thick that will out chop most camp knives and hatchets.

I second the look at ragweedforge.com. The fella lives within driving distance from me. I am having my wife get me a Leuku and smaller utility hunter for Xmas. High carbon steel, classic shape and design that has been proven down through the centuries, and the price is less than a hundred bucks. Have heard nothing but good about these knives. The handles look very comfortable and the blades supposedly are hair shaving sharp out of the box. They claim also that with the single grind, a v-grind that they are very easy to sharpen. You can also get them in different types of steel. High carbon(58-60R), Sandivick stainless(56-58R), and laminated sweedish steel with a high carbon core and 420J as the outer layers. Keep'em sharp

what about S&W HRT combat survival ? It's a little bit on the heavy side, and blade a little bit less than 7" but I my HRT mutch more than my Kabar's :)

The Buck Nighthawk is a good idea. The Buck General has been discontinued this year. You may find one at a closeout price someplace. If it is a pre 1999 model you can send it in to be re-edged with the edge 2000 for about $5 or so.

I'm a little confused here...You say that you are looking for a "good, tough, LARGER" knife with a 7 inch blade. Doesn't THAT describe the Cold Steel Recon Scout "to a T"...With its' 5/16ths of an inch THICK 7&1/2 inch-long blade???.

Beker Knife and Tool from Camillus with a new handle from someone off the forum. If you do a search or just go to the Camillus forum right now, you can see a Patrol Machette that someone put new handles on themselfs.

I know you're looking for a 7 " blade, but how about the Ontario RTAK? Big whopping 10" blade, full tang with Micarta handle slabs. Alot of knife for the money.

Another vote for the Buck Nighthawk:)

I've got two of these a 6 1/2" & 5" mini blade.
The 6 1/2" knife has seen and done stuff that NO
knife should be asked to do. Cut steel banding??
No problem. Punch holes in 55 gal drum?? Again,
No problem. Dig a cat hole on a field trip? Yep,
No problem. Did the knife ever complain or fail??
NEVER!!:D

Re-sharpened in the field without to much effort.
Sometimes with a file (all I had at the time).

So I can say that the "hawk is a true do it whenever I need it knida knife that cost me
$35 at Wally world back a couple of years ago.

Such a deal:eek:

I thought the Recon Scout was smaller. Like a 6" blade. I'll have to go look it up. If it is you're right.

The latest Cold Steel Special Projects catalog I have advertises the factory second Recon Scout for $99.99. No other combat knife in that price range even comes close to being as good.
