I see a lot of comments about carrying a small knife for day hikes, hunting, etc. and a larger one for more serious expeditions. My concern is that any of the above could become more than they were intended to be. Most of the knife recomendations I read are for the planned activity and not the unforseen event. Just a thought.

True... any "adventure" can become more than it was intended to be, whether urban or rural. And a lot of us that recommend knives to others do so based on their stated common usage.

These thoughts occur to me. First, many of us on the boards here carry more than one knife most of the time. I always have one handy, I usually carry two, and sometimes I have 128 with me :D.

Second, quite a few of the knives we talk about are "overbuilt" in the sense that they are high quality blades that are capable of stepping up into a heavier use category if need be, at least for a time.

Third, coping with unexpected circumstances is as much about knowledge and mental preparedness as it is about tools. I've heard of (not done personally, but read of others' experiences) some amazing things done in the bush with smaller-sized blades like Delicas, mini-Grips, Voyagers, and small FBs.
