I want to try and make my own sheaths. Never tried. What is the best leather to use and the minimum tools needed? Website links? Don't want to spend a fortune on tools right now due to budget constraints. Thanks!

Go to Tandy and ask to look at their basic leather crafting kit. But there are so many levels of tools there you'll need to pick wisely. Some of that stuff just isn't worth the money. The wooden mallet and stamped steel slot cutters for instance. A poly mallet is the minimum weight for tooling.

For sheath making in the plain way you can build a kit pretty easy and cheaply. Do a search here for beginners leather kit, or beginners sheath making kit and you should come up with a lot of info. There was one thread fairly recently iirc.

Best of luck!!!

Not sure this is the best but I did the same as you, wanted the minimum tools needed and the manager at Tandy set me up nicely. I had the razors and x-acto knife already so I bought a groover, overstitch wheel, needles, thread, dye, dobbers, sheen, contact cement, and a single shoulder of veggie tanned leather. I am sure I am missing something but that is in a nutshell what I started with. I have added a few pieces, grabbed a beveler, stitching awl ( piece of crap one :( ) neatsfoot, stitching pony, and a Fiskars cutter that looks like a small pizza wheel cutter which I love.

Grab some of Mr. Longs DVD's they are a wealth of information. Also Stolhmans Stitching Handbook is good as well

I would suggest getting the stitching pony or making one, it really helps if hand stitching.

I do not have any stamps or mallets yet but those will come soon.

You can produce basic sheaths of very good quality with the absolute minimum of tools . You certainly don't need every gadget when you first start out .
You have already been given some very good advice so I can't add much more than to say " buy the best raw materials you can afford " .
Quality leather, thread and dyes make your life a lot easier and certainly have a huge influence on the finished product .
Have a go , I'm sure you will really enjoy it , good luck .

8 to 9 oz. vegetable tanned leather seems to work best in my shop. Tandy has many very good Free videos on their site. Including all the basics.
