Not sure this is the best but I did the same as you, wanted the minimum tools needed and the manager at Tandy set me up nicely. I had the razors and x-acto knife already so I bought a groover, overstitch wheel, needles, thread, dye, dobbers, sheen, contact cement, and a single shoulder of veggie tanned leather. I am sure I am missing something but that is in a nutshell what I started with. I have added a few pieces, grabbed a beveler, stitching awl ( piece of crap one

) neatsfoot, stitching pony, and a Fiskars cutter that looks like a small pizza wheel cutter which I love.
Grab some of Mr. Longs DVD's they are a wealth of information. Also Stolhmans Stitching Handbook is good as well
I would suggest getting the stitching pony or making one, it really helps if hand stitching.
I do not have any stamps or mallets yet but those will come soon.
