best leatherman

in no particular order,
the worth of a tool is probably determined by factors like
1) bladetool options
2) compactness (as in overall size 'n packing weight)
3) robustness (as in the durability of parts 'n materials)
4) unit cost and manufacturer's guarantee.
in ideal conditions, a choice would be determined by a process of elimination and thus eventually by way of personal preference.
at the very worst, most choices are a matter of compromise.

In the middleweight division , the two I recommend to the huddled masses are either the Wave/Charge family or the Swisstool Spirit . Of the afore mentioned , the Charge has the highest wow factor( I'm talking the TTI ) , the Spirit is the best built . All are great tools that will serve you well.

Until young mr. Multitasker gets of the dime , and offers a civilian version ; this won't change any time soon .

I have a Spirit. No problems.

What particular uses/tools do you value in a multitool?

Well up until now I have been using a old leatherman supertool that I got back in 2002-2003

i just got a supertool 300 and i'm in love with it, aside from the lack of scissors but i have a micra to make up for that.

I EDCed a Charge Ti for years and it took care of everything i needed it to. These days i carry a swisstool spirit x on my hip.

For years I carried a Super Tool and Micra every day, so well satisfied by the combo that I was not in the market for anything else. Eventually, though, thanks to bad influences  :D on (mostly) this forum, I got curious about other multitools and, whenever the price was right, picked up several to try out, including Swisstool and Spirit. After suitable trial periods, these were sold off or given away. Impressed as I was by many of them for their features and workmanship, I always returned to the Leathermen because they provided, for my purposes, better tools.

A few years ago, I was seduced into a Charge TTi outfit because of the one hand opening blades and bit kit system, which added versatility, so that replaced my ST, which I gave to a deserving friend. Along the way, I found a niche for a Juice CS4, so it became part of the rotation. Recently, I lucked into a deal on a ST 300, and after working with it a while, it seemed like the return of an old buddy.

Now that I have a Leatherman in each size category, I guess I'm done shopping :D .

In all honesty , I don't think any tool mentioned so far would let you down . If you liked the old Supertool , the Supertool 300 would be up your alley . Personally I rotate between a Wave and a Spirit , and a Freestyle - depending on what i expect from the day . The Leatherman MUT has reared it's ugly head , and hasn't left my side for a week .

A good buddy carries my old Swisstool for work ( due to the tool density ) , and a Charge TTI for dress and play .

There is no right answer , just what floats your boat .

Think I might take a long look at the spirit

I was going to be a wise guy and recommend the Spirit as the best Leatherman. But I see others beat me to it.

When I EDC a medium to large multitool, its the Spirit. And I have several Leathermans to compare it to. Its just a subjective thing with me, and the fact that I don't need a killer Supertool 300 with replaceable cutters hanging on my belt.

Consider also the Squirt PS4 for keychain or pocket carry. Limited utility, but it weighs nothing and comes in mighty handy for EDC.
