Best looking but secure knife display- and does anyone have extra insurance on their collection?

Factory made, DIY, whatever ya got.

I was thinking about some thick plexi but it scratches so easily. Thick glass would be expensive. With all the LED options around now you can do some nice lighting on the cheap.

As for locks, thick biometric would be neat, and some kind of alarm system sent immediately to a cell would be good for security against thieves if away from home (although for long trips you could obviously just put them in your high quality gun safe bolted into concrete floors).
Which brings me to the other point- some of you guys have knives that are closing in on $1k each. Do you put a rider on your home insurance? Generally speaking, you only get a fraction of household contents on regular home insurance. My guy quoted me I think $10 per thousand yearly and the items have to be somewhat specific (like "jewelry", "firearms", etc.) and in some cases the exact item with a certified estimate (engagement rings and the like that come with them usually).

Anyway, if anyone has done this- especially the alarm sent to phone piece- post some info.

Secure display is somewhat of a contradiction. Typically, the more visible, the less secure something will be. If you're looking to have a display that can also stop potential residential burglars, I'd think you'd want what's basically a bolted-down, locking cabinet with windows made from either security glass or something like marine acrylic used for hatches (which is plenty scratch resistant). Home security is generally focused on deterrence by making your home a less appealing target overall (e.g. exterior lighting and cameras, alarm and signage) and physically slowing down the ability to take valuables (e.g. a safe bolted to the floor).

If you want a truly secure display, a walk-in vault is really the best way - access to the room itself is secure, but once inside, everything is easily visible.

On the cheap, a big gun safe, a good wireless camera and some battery-powered LED lights...

Not sure about secure, but I have been eye balling a "curio cabinet" for a mineral specimen collection my wife and I have been building for a couple years. Think mostly glass. Some come with real nice lights for jewelry and such. Basically not secure.... My knives live in a pelican case tucked in the closet  My wife would prefer we don't decorate like Mad Max. Maybe someday when I have a workshop I'll get to decorate that space as I see fit ;)

Not really for display, but a gun safe shelf with knife slots cut into the foam would make me feel Baba Yaga every time I pulled a knife out

As for insurance, our renters covers a general cost of possessions. For the expensive jewelry, china, knives, and guns, we have a supplemental rider. The rider is dirt cheap (relative to cost of what it covers) and it would add significant financial hurt on top of the emotional hurt if we got broken into and lost it all. If you find yourself asking whether you could afford to replace stolen possessions, I'd say it should be included. A call to your insurance could clear up whether they would be covered as it already stands.

As a quick aside as well, I think there are a good number of members here who have knives which are significantly more than $1000 haha :p

"Marine Acrylic"- that's what I think the answer is. Gotta be cheaper than security glass.
I have PLENTY of security- but not where I can look and enjoy. I like the idea of a well lit box of acrylic, just put it in view of motion activated security when out, although now that I think of it NO ONE cares about knives but me. I don't think most people could tell the difference between a $40 CRKT and a $400 CRK. Plebes
