Best lube for Bali knives

As a collector of nice blades, I got to thinking that the Bali, takes more punishment as a folder than any other out there.

Well, while I am not a Bali owner, what lube is best for a Bali and thus best for a folder? At the moment I use PTFE dry and White grease. With Smith and Wesson Friction Bloc and Tuf Glide.

I am looking to get some Miltech one, is it THAT good? How easy is it to put on? Do you need to remove ALL other grease etc?

Cheers!

I've heard lots of good stuff about Militec-1 but I use some stuff called "Tetra Gun Oil", I put it on my 42 one time and I never heard it squeak ever again, the one thing I don't like about it (besides the smell) is that it turns black and you have to wipe it away since it spreads out. Maybe I'll try heating the tang and hinge pin area and just dropping it in there and leaving it overnight like you do with Militec-1.

The difference between Trolling and asking is often just in the wording.

You are absolutely right to ask balisong artists about lubricating folding knives. In just a few minutes of manipulation, a balisong artist can cycle the joints on a balisong more times than most folding knives will experience in a year.

I swore by TetraGun until discovering Militec-1.

You can read about my experiences with Militec-1 in this essay

Question, why would you have to oil a Bali song, unless it developed a squeek, or had a tight handle? I have owned a Bear, a Jag, and now this old brass one. I never oiled any unless they got damaged. Never had a problem develope from a lack of lubrication. Broken handles, but nothing else.

Hi Harvie, me too. I never oil it unless it squeaks or doesn't run smooth.

Chuck, any danger of not oiling it? (or lubricating it if you use Militec)

My 42AS developed a bit of a squeak that required I oil it and my Bear was hopelessly destroyed so I tried oilling it to no avail.

Your car engine will run without oil... briefly. The car engine is a bad example because the oil is actually a critical part of the cooling system. But the point is that a metal-to-metal interface generally requires some sort of lubrication. Without it, the two metal pieces gall against each other. No two pieces of metal are every perfectly smooth no mater how you polish. There are always microscopic imperfections in the surface, little valleys and little ridges. When they rub against each other, it's like rubbing two pieces of sand paper together, they wear each other down. The problem is that this wearing process on the surface of metal tends to accelerate. What a lubricant does is fill in those valleys and make the surface smooth.

I've found that on every balisong I've used, a little lubrication makes the joints move faster, smoother, and easier.

Your BM42 was lubed at the factory with Militec-1.

About a year ago I aquired a heavy solid handled balisong that has seen a tremendous amount of use and had very loose handles to prove it. After removing the otherwise decent solid pins on this knife, I noticed deep channels in the middle of the pin. The previous owner probably never lubed the pins once. Now, this type of wear would take me years to replicate, but it helps to know what negleting the lub will do to your pins........hmmmm, should have saved those pins, I'll never see something like that again

I love this topic.

The fat from a good steak works. But if you want something more Hi Tech try:

Finish Line Professional Bicycle Lubricant.

Real cheep works wonderfully It goes on wet and dries up leaving an invisable Teflon + Trilinum film BFD

Try it $3.95 for 2 fl oz. 2000 Miles on the Bike, 4 Bali's, and my folders. I think I still have a few years left fo go on my 1st bottle. Also it does not attract dirt.

It works for me.

Hello anagarika, and everyone else. I never oiled any of my balisongs, but I will definitly oil my 42 when I get it. I know the pins would grind away after a while, but since I never owned a knife that lasted as long as it would take, I thought it pointless. The 42 should last long enough though.

If the 42 is oiled with Militek -1 from the factory, I would like to continue to use that, so were can I get some? Also, how is it aplyed? I use "3 in 1 oil", but it wears off fast. How long does an application of Militek last?

Thanks Gollnick, Don't know why I did not see that link the first time. I have just one question, how long, once you finish the third application, will it last before you have to reaply it? Ifthis stuff works as well as claimed, I think I will get the "SniperPack" from them. I have guns too.

This post has been enlightening! I never thought of the pins being worn off at the center .. I assume because of the knife holes at the tang wearing them off...

I have to start lubing them I guess...

thanks!

I had a BM 239blk that I wore the pins out on, even though I lubed it with CLP. I use Militec-1 on everything now, Balis, guns, even squeaky door hinges. The stuff rocks.

Gollnick is absolutly right about it needing heat to perform it's best, after the third or fourth application of it to one of my semi-auto rifles (a cheap chinese POS) it malfunctioned maybe once every 500-600 rounds instead of everyother time I pulled the trigger. The stuff is amazing.

I like how you have to use Miltec-1 a few times before it works properly! I used Tetra Gun oil ONCE and did not need to heat it and it is still working 100% better weeks later than Breakfree EVER did.
