I've read some great reviews and discussions on machetes here, but many seem to come with a poor quality sheath, if any. What great machete comes with a great sheath?

Mods; If this needs to be moved to General Knife Discussion, I won't cry about it. I just figured the guys here would be more knowledgable about carrying systems for a machete it the woods. Thanks

i have found that condor's sheaths are decent as are ontario's, both pretty much being aftermarket purchases. i believe some of the older model stainless models of condors do come with a sheath when purchased.

i don't see to many machetes sold with sheaths, and if a sheath is availiable it is very basic to say the least.

Are sheaths really that important? I've never felt the need for one on a machete longer than 12".

If it's for use rather than an ornament I think a bit of PVC tube is about as good as it gets. Pick your favorite machete and go for it - 1] Compact, 2] low weight, 3] retains it's shape, 4] safe 'cos there's nothing you'll cut through drawing or sheathing, and 5] it won't go manky in the damp and is easy to clean & dry. And potentially 6] if you can think of other uses for a bit of tube while you are out like fanning fire. Baldric options to attach to one abound.

Unless I'm mistaken, ANY of the stainless models come with a sheath, as do SOME of the carbon ones. It depends on the model. :)

The Condor leather sheaths are easily the nicest production machete sheaths I've yet come across.

Ben Meadows outdoor equipment catalogs have some very nice plastic lined ballistic nylon sheaths that have held up well for me.--KV

The KSF Machete or "Barktario" is an Ontario machete blade reshaped, reground and rehandled by Bark River and they come with a fantastic leather sheath from Sharpshooter. I got one from the first run a while back but I believe Derrick has ordered another round of them. They are way beyond the price range of the well loved Tramontina's but they are some wickedly sharp machetes.
