What do you guys think is the best device for looking closely at knife edges? I have a 10x jeweler's loupe, but I want more power.
Thanks!

Check out the local Radio Shack. They have 30x and 100x magnifiers with light. The 30x seems O.K. I have not tried the 100x.

Short of a scanning electron microscope, which would be a bit oversized, I am using a 20x stereo microscope to my full satisfaction.
Much more magnification will not show more, only "larger". (Details are limited by numeric aperture of optics)
The price was "one knife".
Happy sharpening.

I use a folding field lens with a stainless metal casing. I love it and have found it really useful over the years. Good ones are expensive. Here's a link to some in Canada: http://www.esci.com/genSci/1/1002/1006/10287.html

Our school just got an Intel Play microscope that hooks up to computer. It actually works well! Good for taking snapshots and posting pics..

Jimbo, your link is not working.

I find that the more magnification the better. Regular microscopes, while powerful (40x to say 1000x) will only show the very edge as they lit from the bottom. They are

Inspection scopes are good they generally magnify to up to 100X.

A pretty good inexpensive scope is a 50x pen style made sold by Edmund Scientic. http://www.edmundscientific.com/Products/DisplayProduct.cfm?productid=1352.

Stereo scopes are nice but expensive and are generally fairly low power.

Good topic...very useful too. Though I have a variety of magnifying tools available and that I use at different times, from loupes, mag binocs, large and small mag lenses, turret scope, the one I find most useful for use with knives is a 2 lens pocket clip magnifier. Don't remember where I got it but its black plastic about 1/4 x 3/4 x 3" with a sliding lens cover to protect the 2 lenses. The major lens is a 10x and the lesser lens is a 20 or 30x I don't remember. What I do know is it works great and is more compact than carrying a loupe...easy to have at the ready, fits in the pocket like a pen and just as light. I bought a cpl. of them cpl. years back. Seems like the were bout $4 or $5.
