In the past year or so since joining the forums and researching custom knives I have become very familiar with the current knife makers. However , I very seldom come across knives by makers who, for whatever reason, are no longer in the business. The best example of one I have seen was the Hill Pearce collection posted by Coop a while back. From a pure collectors viewpoint it would be quite a challenge to go after an ex makers finite portfolio.

So for all you long term and well read collectors out there, this is a request to post/describe your favourite knives from makers that will probably never make another piece.

Cheers,

Stephen

John M. Smith (the bowie guy, not the folder guy..)
Gary Barnes
Michael Connor
Bob Hayes
Roger Green (I am pretty sure he quit)
Jimmy Fikes

Good thread, Anthony's got some good ones.

I've got a few, and will miss alot:

Warren Goltz: some of the finest fixed blades.. Retired due to health
Wayne Valochovich: Retired
Sean McWilliams: Retired and disappeared
Robert Rippy: Not sure why
Willie Rigney: Retired

Hi Stephen,

Wonderful topic. Thanks for the mention. :)

Hill Pearce: Fixed blades, Folders

That's why.

Robert Ogg (deceased) probably made 3000 folders in his signature style. They pop up here and there. Nice work and HEFTY springs. I bought this and chased it back to Bob's wife on a trade with Max Burnett, his stepson. Engraved folder. And another which I currently own. Engraved Ogg Osage Orange folder..

I always hear old-timers refering to 'Jim Schmidt'.

I'm with you on Sean McWilliams Mr Heger ,can you imagine what he would be creating if he was still at it ?

Mike England. I have one knife by him. An injection molded divers knife. Fabulous work of art.

Here's a pic of a Jimmy Fikes:

Bob Engnath.

Anthony, Michael Connor still makes knives. At least that's what he told me when I ordered one a little while back.

Ray Beers. I hope he still making. I know he told my back in 95 he was stopping for personal reasons.

Does anyone know anything about Harrold Corby? I haven't heard anything about him in the last five years or so. He made some good looking knives.

What happened to Steve Filicietti? He was getting so much press.
I believe I heard he quit making knives and started to do something else. Is that right?

JIM FISTER a ABS style maker. Simpsonville, KY. He has rettred to the Winabago. One of the olds timers from the 70's , whom with Morris Pullian perfected all high-carbon Damascus when the magazines were still telling folks that Damascus was low carbon and high carbon.

That Bob Ogg is a beauty, I have his video and all I can say is WOW.
Frank Richtig, Clyde Fisher, Harvey Draper Hough Bartung and many others all did some great work.

My understanding he hasn't quite stopped yet. I could be wrong. He will be at this years Chesapeake Custom Knife show in Baltimore on Dec. 12.
