What is the best mask, in your opinion, for the shop? I want the best quality mask and price is not a problem. I'd rather have high quality, safety, and comfort, instead of saving a dollar.

Please list some various brand options with reasons why you think it's the best. Example, conforms to the face better, doesn't hurt my head with extended hours of use, requires less maintaining, and breathes easier...ect.

Thanks in advance

If cost truly isn't an issue, get a 3M full hood PAPR.

Otherwise, the full face mask 3M makes is nice.

I use a 3m 7500 series. 7501=small, 02=med, 03=large. I have a normal sized face and should have gotten the 7502. I jumped on a 7503 for $2 at an auction, so it was a deal I couldn't pass up, but I'd like to go to a full face mask soon. I wonder which ones Andy Roy and company use. They look like they'd be comfortable.

Thanks everyone. This gives me a starting place for some more research. Any advice on where to go to try on a mask/purchase?

Check for local industrial/janitorial supply places. We have several different places that cater to safety or janitorial places. Or, check home depot, lowes, or similar.

Or, buy a 7502 off Amazon and take a chance. They aren't that different.

The best mask... is the one you use. Too many people dont use any protection at all.
Do. Not. Grind. Without. A. Mask. Clear? You will regret it. I made several without a mask. Fast forward a couple years. The other day I was wearing my mask and had ground several blanks. I did a couple piddly things afterwards then took my mask off to sweep the floor. When I went inside I felt like crap. I blew my nose and it looked like snotty metal dust. Just from sweeping the floor. My shop is a 16x16 room, basically, inside my pole barn. 8' ceilings, so it's pretty enclosed. No ventilation to blow dust out.

Now, I hang my mask, hat to cover my hair, safety glasses, long sleeved shirt, and shop apron on the outside of the shop. They go on when I go in and don't come off until I come out.

If you think masks are expensive, message Laurence, rhinoknives, and ask how important your lungs are and how important protecting them are.

If you put some info in your profile like, country, state, city

we could probably give you some local leads

Open the yellow pages under

Or start at the website of a good product like 3M, or North safety
and use the website tols to find a local distributor for their products

A good safety supply store should be very knowledgeable, and give good customer service.as govt regulations require employers to help get an employee be fitted, equipped and trained to use one.
Especially after that, they get all the repeat filter sales.

P100 is the spec to keep in mind for a respirator mask

As mentioned, if money is no object, fresh supplied air hoods are nice and comfortable.

You can't use a full face mask with spectacles.

Mexican wrestling mask for sure.

Seriously though. I've been hearing good things about these and am thinking about trying one out.

Yep! A Mexican Wresting Man of El Gordo and one of these Resperators. The very best I've ever used and I have a Air American Miners airflow with the helmet and face shield and several different 3M Half masks. I call it my snorkel!

And you don't need to use the nose clip like the spastic dorks at the pool wore when we were kids. Water, or dust, won't go up your nose if you don't breathe in through it.
I just tell people to pretend you are snorkeling. only breathe in and out of your mouth. or what I do is like a circular Hatha yoga breathing exercise. breath in by my mouth and out through my nose. Only!

The other cool thing here is a can drop it out for a second to talk with someone and then just pop it back in my mouth. The half face ones are a hassle to put on and off.

I was going to say a rubber Richard Nixon mask, but I guess that one of those Luchador rigs would work. Probably cooler in the summer. I still chuckle when I think about turing on the TV in Cancun and seeing a Mexican adventure move where Mil Mascaras was the hero and he was flying a Cessna in a suit and his mask on the way to rescue some damsel in distress. :D

Do we know the P value of the filters?

Also likely good to note that they will likely not filter out chemicals like some of the mask filters will.

That said, for grinding metal and wood I think I will pick one up.

Welding supply should have full and half face respirators and filters.
I use a 3m half face that I use for welding and welding inspection. It uses the p100 filters. I will most likely be changing to a full face for the added eye protection. grit and metal keep finding their way behind my safety goggles and I'm running out of q-tips getting them out.

Also remember that dust can linger airborne for a day or two. So just cause you shut off the grinder doesn't mean there isn't lots of crud in the air.

Also Super glue, Acctone and some epoxies are nasty! So do that kind of stuff in a well ventilated area and wear your mask too.

I have a modular forced-air system. Headpiece is a 3M M-100 (part of their PAPR system), bought from Amazon. Air pump is a Breathcool II, bought from their website. The headpiece is premium - cool and super comfortable. The air pump is economy grade. Use of this type of system relies on a source of clean air, in which you place the air pump. I'm extremely happy with it.

The aforementioned forced air full-face systems/masks are obviously the best, assuming that you are being supplied with clean air.

At the very least use an N95 mask. More preferably, an N100 Mask.

I like the 3M model 8233 N100 respirator. It supposedly "is 99.97% efficient in non-oily environments . . . plus it includes a respirator valve to help verify that it it fitted properly and to make it more comfortable."

No matter what mask you choose check out the http://www.mfasco.com website. There are many options there and it is a favorite with a lot of groups for obvious cost reasons.

Plus they offer other supplies to help plan for "the end of the world as we know it".:)
