I guess it's time to thoroughly learn and understand the difference between bainite, pearlite, martinsite, 'missing the nose' on the TTT and all that. I sure could use a recomendation or two on a book(s) that will not put me in a coma but will give me the skinny on what I need to know as a knifemaker. Thanks for any help.

Jim Batson mentioned the following to me when I asked him what he would recommend:

three volume set of books, "Steel and Its Heat Treatment," by D.K. Bullens of the Battelle Institute. Published by John Wiley and Sons

First try spelling it correctly, it's metallurgy. I'm glad you're attempting to learn. With that knowledge you will get a much better product.

When I asked this same question, Metallurgy Theory and Practice by Dell K. Allen
was recommended to me (also the Brandt book Jason mentioned).

I was able to get a used copy of the Allen book through Amazon at a good price. I haven't seen the Brandt so I can't compare the two but, from what I was told, either one is what you want.
