I guess it's time to thoroughly learn and understand the difference between bainite, pearlite, martinsite, 'missing the nose' on the TTT and all that. I sure could use a recomendation or two on a book(s) that will not put me in a coma but will give me the skinny on what I need to know as a knifemaker. Thanks for any help.

My top choice. Its written in plain-English. Very clear and simple to establish those all important basics. A good platform to step off of. I highly recommend it for your first book on the topic and best of all, coma-free.

When I asked this same question, Metallurgy Theory and Practice by Dell K. Allen
was recommended to me (also the Brandt book Jason mentioned).
I was able to get a used copy of the Allen book through Amazon at a good price. I haven't seen the Brandt so I can't compare the two but, from what I was told, either one is what you want.
