I do alot of bushwork when surveying and my axe is very handy to use yet it is quite ackward to carry most of the time unless it is all i am carrying. It cut through the sheath long ago so there is no sheath! I have stuck it between my survey vest and my back with the head being close to my neck (when it had a sheath) and that seemed like the best way to carry it. As well it was out of the way when i am carrying other equipment. Does anyone make a backpack type sheath for an axe? I've seen guys stick the axe through their belts at kind of an angle as well but it seems clumsy if your using a chainsaw or carrying equipment. I'm talking about an axe wtih a 24inch handle to clarify things. As well, what is a better alternative to weak leather sheaths? Suggestions are welcome!

thanks

A quality leather sheath should not be cut by the axe assuming its made correctly. However if you really want to prevent this completely, get a kydex sheath made. There are lots of people working in Kydex contact a few. Most of them also do rigging suggestions as well and could easily create a behind the back carry.

I wear an 8lb truckmans axe nearly every call that I go on in a leather axe belt. My axe belt encloses the axe head and the flap is velcroed down. It had been it hundreds of fires and thousands of training exercises and still goes strong. I got mine from LN Curtis & Sons.

ya, mine us usually sharp enough to shave with. But i think the problem was in the design of the sheath it came with, the two leather sides are riveted together, after a couple of hits and some wear, the axe always breaks through the rivits in the end of the sheath, leaving the sheath useless. 4Godandcountry: roughly how long is the handle on your axe to give me a comparison. I never really though of a belt sheath, that might work! Thanks for the info.
