hey just looking at getting a new smaller knife i was thinking the Cold Steel Mini Tuff Lite folder. any comments about this knife or any suggestions on better ones?
IMO small knives should be very 'slicy' with a thin sharp edge. These days 90% of my routine cutting is done with either a Spyderco SuperBlue ManBug or a GEC #55 Wharncliffe blade.
I started out with more modern tastes and have slowly moved to slip joints as of late. The peanut and dragonfly are two of my all time favorite. I could do 99% of what I do with a knife with either of them. People who don't like knives also seem to not freak out when I use them in public.
Tuff lite is my favorite whittling knife. I prefer the ethos of my dragonfly. Agree with small knifes need to be thin behind the shoulder and very slicey.
I have a nice Spyderco Micro Dyad sitting in my watch pocket for those little things. It can do almost everything I do with a knife and it's totally adorable! People like it.
Its hard to beat the Mini Tuff-Lite as a quality mini folder for only $20 or so. If the blade shape works for your cutting needs, go for it. I usually carry mine clipless in the watch pocket of my jeans when Im not carrying any larger knife.
I love sub 3" folders. Of what I have/have had I recommend:
Spyderco Dragonfly ZDP-189 preferably
DPx HEAT/F
LionSteel Opera
Caly 3, especially the CF/ZDP-189 version. I have so many knives this size I'm selling this one as it never sees use.
I second the mini griptilian. It is an excellent knife if you want to pay the money for it. Also look at the lower number opinels (try opinel 6)which are quite nice knives for the cheep price tag. Also a spyderco delica 4 ffg is an amazing knife. Good luck and tell us what you get.
The Dragonfly series (I have a pile of different models) are prettier, but the CS Tuff Lite and Mini Tuff Lite are cheaper and more useful in hand, in my experience.
