Just looking for a knifenuts opinion (CPF sometimes gets to wordy for me). I'm basically looking for something not too complicated, yet puts out a quality beam. So far my reseach has brought me to the following three: Opalec NewBeam, Lambda MiniPro or MJLED and TerraLux MiniStar 2. Any suggestions? Which is the best of the three?

Thanks! :)

I love the Opalec Newbeam for its great regulation, flood output, long runtime and low battery indicator.

I got my MJLED today. It is very impressive on Lithiums and has a nice tight spot with great spill. Output with alkalines and rechargables was not good though.

I still prefer the Newbeam as it will take any batteries and regulate the output.

The minstar 2 is pretty nice too. The beam will have some artifacts, not as bad as the original though. The output and runtime are very good.

Don't have any of the other two - but procrastinated for a long, long time over which drop-in replacement LED to use in a MiniMag - finally heard about the MJLED - and it sounded just what I wanted - bright yet with a very long run time.

and the price was right @ $10 shipped for the MJLED Kit (including pre-drilled reflector and mineral glass "lens").

So I ordered one kit - and just got it - it probably was one of the last chapter II MJLEDs - and I can said unequivocally that it's everything I wished for in a MiniMag drop-in -
and to steal someone else's quote -
"Fitted in seconds, but smiled for hours"

See my comparative review with beamshots over at CPF (no complicated language - just lots of pictures - so you can draw your own conclusions) -

Thanks Vincent for the comparison photo's. From the looks of it, I'm sold on the MJLED. Can't beat the price and the output. Would there be any other place that sells the kit? They're sold out on the Lambda site. :(

I just read this is another source for the "MJ" LEDs -

MJ Cut down High-power 5mm LED

No kits that I can see though (I think that may be a Lambda exclusive) -
just have to drill out the hole of the existing reflector - doesn't seem that hard
- just follow the instructions carefully from the Lambda site.

(easy for me to say - since I got the kit :D)

This MJLED looks cool. How does the light intesity compare to the stock lightbuld of the 2AA mini-mag? Does it throw the same distance? Can you focus the beam wide and narrow as well?

Thanks

victus if you click the links all your questions will be answered. VT- they're sold out of kits.. what are they odds of them getting some more in stock?

That beamshot is rather misleading. The reflectors/optics need to be same to get an accurate shot. Both of those are also overloading the camera and you need to manually adjust the cameras settings so that neither is.

Lambda is probably out of stock for at least a couple of weeks as the reflectors he ships with the kits have not arrived last I heard. You can order a MJ LED from the Shoppe(whoops Uknown VT beat me to it).

Yes it is focusable.

Focused stock MiniMag acording to quickbeam has 884 lux@1meter focused MJ LED according to Lambda has 334 lux@1meter(the new ones).

My minipro is currently residing in a micromag and I couldn't be happier with it.

Dat2zip's equivilent is either a madmax or madmax+.

Good luck on the decision,

Jay
