I was digging through he knife drawer in preparation for a backpacking trip finding it very hard to decide what folder to take with me. I like a medium to large fixed blade accompanied by a folder for detailed work and slicing tasks. I decided to put my top picks to a whittling test and was pretty surprised by the result.

None of my modern folders kershaw, benchmade, cold steel, sog could hold a candle to my 1986 carbon steel case trapper. The case bit into the wood and sliced off huge chunks compared to the others it wasn't even close. The XL cold steel voyager came closest but didn't have the same control or finesse.

Is there any modern knife that can replace my trapper? I would really like something that locks, one hand opening, with lighter grippier handle materials than jigged bone.

The spay blade on the trapper has been sharpened over 30 years to have zero secondary bevel (basically a straight razor). it is flexible and thin but still tough. I would like these qualities in its replacement, would consider small sub 4" fixed blades as well.

I know you said you want something that locks, but if your case has served you well for 30 years, why not just buy a new case (or othet carbon equivelant like bojer tree brand or queen) and call it a day?

oh I won't stop using the traditionals they will always have a place in the collection just craving something new. Also very tempted by traditional lockbacks like a queen mountain man or swing guard. Any other lockback traditional patterns the size of a trapper?

Look at the carving jack series from flex cut. They make a couple of different models that are great whittlers but they aren't too great at doing anything besides wood carving. The one I've got has by far the sharpest factory edge of any knife I've ever handled.
