Best Money-clip: Spyderco Dragonfly, Mouse, or other...?

What are your opinions on the best knife/money-clip? I used to own a ss handle Dragonfly, but I gave it to my brother when he went to college. I really liked that knife. I was going to buy another to replace my (non-knife) money-clip...but then I kept thinking about the Mouse...

Which would you choose? And...IF you pick the mouse, why would you pay the almost $30-40 more for it (nearly double the price)?

Thanks in advance!:)

IMHO go with the Mouse. :D I am holding both in my hand now and comparing. The Mouse has VG-10 Steel which is great for utility knives. The blade is a Wegner design and is hollow ground vs. the flat grind of the Dragonfly. But what really makes the Mouse a great money clip knife is the curves and smooth rounded Almite handle which is easy on the pocket. Just a great overall piece. But you can't go wrong with the Dragonfly either, so good luck. :D

Thanks Tac.

In your opinion, how durable is the Almite finish compared to the finish of the SS handle on the dragonfly? I know that SS gets scratched with use, but I usually try to stear away from coatings of any kind... Im not worried about scratchs per say...but I don't want one that will become discollored or two-tone with use.

So, let me add one more question in here: Does anyone have a pic of both of these knives after they have been used and 'broken-in' for a while?

Thanks!

Check out the Kershaw Chive. I use mine as a money-clip and is very satisfied. Gotta love the speed safe.

The mouse is the more substantial knife, the dragonfly (the SS version) the more elegant. I've used both equally. I have experienced the mouse getting very hard to open (gunked up I presume) with no way to open it and clean it. I can't clean the dragonfly either, but it has never gotten stiff on me like the mouse.

All that aside, I personally think the SOG Access card with its clip makes a much better money clip than either of the two knives above mainly because it is FLAT like a money clip should be.

Some good choices here. :D Let me add one more, how about an Al-Mar SLB? :D Warriorsociologist, I have found that the matte finish of Almite doesn't show key scratches as much as a stainless polished finish. As far as beating up my purty Almite Spydies enough to really test the finish, no I haven't done that. That is what Zytel is for. ;) Matthew, pardon me for stating the obvious, but have you tried CLP Break Free or swishing in a sink of soapy water on that stcky Mouse? :D

I have noticed that the Mouse is harder to open, but I think that it's more to a stiff spring. However, these things lock up like little tanks!

I have found the best money clip knife is a Cricket.

Not only is the oval shape (when closed) nice, but it also looks like a money clip. I have yet to scare anyone with a cricket, yet it can be deadly effective if need be. They are also considerably cheaper than a Wegner Mouse.

Just my opinion.

Hi Tactical! I did try a very light machine oil (sewing machine oil), and that helped for a while. I just got some Breakfree for the first time and I tried it out. Makes a great deal of difference and brings the action back to its original smoothness. I'll have to see how long it lasts, but thanks for the idea.

Both my mouse and the dragonfly lock up very tightly. Both good options for this application. I don't use a money clip, but when I have carried one or the two of them its usually been the dragonfly because its lighter weight has been a feature when I need something that small. Of course much of the mouse's appeal went away after 9/11. The mouse was the perfect small knife for air travel, but not, obviously, any more. Since now you have to pack any knife in baggage, the mouse is no better than some of my other folders, and its high price tag (relatively for a small production knife) would be another minus. Remember airport authorities are now authorized to search even your checked luggage by hand at their discretion! A nice knife might decide to find its way to some other pocket easily enough.

Mind you I hope my paranoia is not being realized in other peoples' experience when they've flown in the last few months. I'm not saying I've lost anything in luggage. I am saying that it seems to me now to be a pretty obvious "new opportunity" for the occasional dishonest airline security employee, and we ought, at least, to be on the lookout for it.

. . . check out the BM "Big Spender". I picked one up a bit ago and it makes a much better money clip than my Chive or CRKT. The clip itself is much better for holding bills. The knife aspect is excellent as well. They going for about $50 on the net.

I 2nd the BM Big Spender ... I love that knife! Cheap, light, slim, well made. Get it! (Added Feature) Take the clip off and you can slip it into your wallet with virtually no bulk added.

I carry it these days like this:

Hey there again Matthew! :D Remember the Spyderco ads with the Mouse pictured next to a passport? That's why I bought mine too, for air travel. Nothing like zipping off that bank vault like food packaging while others struggled with their theirs. :p *SIGH* Not anymore though. :( But I think the Mouse still has advantages over other blades it's size. Due to the superb Wegner design of the blade and handle, it can do quite a lot of useful work for such a small knife including field dressing. :D

I am going with the Mouse. I wanted this little knife not for air travel (though, that would have been nice), but for off-duty carry on Federal instalations (as it has a sub- 2.5 in. blade). I chose the mouse over the Dragonfly due to the fact it has better steel and I just plain looks more interesting IMO. Thanks everyone for all the input!!!
