I have been collecting/accumulating knives for approximately thirty years, experimenting with new acquisitions on a more frequent basis in the last ten years or so. In my many years of enjoying knives I’ve focused mainly on fixed blades, as most of my knife use involves hunting, fishing, and camping.

In this time period I have acquired over a dozen folders, and about twice as many fixed blades. While searching through my collection for a particular folder recently, I came to realize just how large the collection has become over these years. Knives I’d forgotten I even had made their appearance as I searched through piles of knives looking for this particular knife. This got me thinking. How many knives can one really need/use? Of those in my collection, just how many have even seen any use in recent years? While I would never part with a single one, I got to wondering, what would make up the perfect all-round collection of FOLDER, MEDIUM FIXED BLADE, and LARGE FIXED BLADE for my specific needs, which include hunting, fishing, and camping, if I were ever to decide to limit myself to one in each of the three categories.

In examining my many knifes, I also came to realize that in the nearly three dozen that I currently own, there wasn’t ONE with a blade length over five inches, something I rectified with a recent order for a 7” blade, due to arrive early next week.

Limiting the choices to only PRODUCTION knives, what would be the perfect knife in each of the three categories for hunting, fishing, and camping use specifically:

Folder
Medium fixed blade
Large fixed blade

Without divulging those in my current collection I’m really curious if any in my current collection will make the list, and if maybe even another purchase is necessary to completely round out my ever growing collection!

Thanks,

Treadwell

The knives that first come to mind for productions are the Buck 110 (folder), Buck Woodsman (medium fixed), and the Buck Special (large fixed). I would also suggest you check out the Bark River Knives. These are productions of very good quality if you aren't aware of them. I personally like the Gameskeeper, Huntsman, and the Mini- and Mikro Canadians. There are more expensive ones I can suggest, but I don't know how high you want to go. One I would mention in the $200+ range would be the Bob Dozier K-2. It has a 3.5" blade of D2 and is an awesome knife. Hope this helps.

It’s hard to just chose three knifes for that kind of specialised jobs. I have the same ‘problem’. A good folder (even for EDC), small and larger fixed blade set-up for hunting, fishing, and camping. I prefer a SAK (even better a multitool), a good small/midsize hunting-knife and amachete/kukri type blade. Not very specific…..I know!!!

I carry a Leatherman Wave, J.Marttiini Lynx 129 (bought on holiday in Finland) and I’m looking for a good but not expensive machete/kukri type blade. Like a CS 97KMS Kukri Machete. Any suggestions are always welcome!

If you are planning a long hiking tour through really remote terrain, it’s sensible to carry also a light weight allround/field-knife type of blade, next to you survival kit. It does not have to be so expensive, think about a Glock 78 or a small Ka-Bar.

Check the link for the J.Marttiini http://www.marttiini.fi/puukot/shop/english/prod.asp?ContID=232

Becker crewman for medium fixed blade.

BK9 for large fixed blade

And then cold steel Vaquero folder or spyderco chinook.

Those are the knives that i usually find my self carrying and using more when needed.

I will second the Himayalan Imports khukuri for your large choice.
The Bark River Knife and Tool , Fox River would make a great medium/small fixed blade.
Folder is harder, I tend toward the tactical in folders but I think my large Sebenza is my most versital user folder.
Well those would be my choices.:D
