My Nephew is looking at buying a Multi-tool and has the good sense to want a Leatherman, but his funds are a bit limited (Yeah, you don't like where this is going, neither do I). This would be the first knife that he buys with money that he sweated to earn so I don't want whatever he gets to be a disapointment, So...

What are the best values in multi-tools? All sugestions are welcome.

If you want to make it even more challenging.

What is the best multi-tool you can buy for $40? $30? $20?

(yeah, I know I could give him a cash advance on his birthday to help towards something better, but he's becoming an adult and I don't want to insult him like that)

You can't really go wrong with a good LM Kick IMO. Cheap, good pliers and great screwdrivers. If he can wait a while there's the upcoming Sidekick and Wingman from LM as well. Obviously no first hand experience but they do look promising.

LM Fuse can be bought from Amazon for $33 and change. Spend a little more money and he'll get LM Blast for a little over $41.

If you poke around enough online you can find the Gerber 600 (and sometimes the Diesel) for $35-40 and the Gerber 400 for about $30 new. The Leatherman Blast is also in that price range. All these are decent multitools. Shipping cost can push those figures up $8-10 from some vendors though. It might pay to look on Ebay. With Leatherman's excellent warranty, it would be hard to go wrong with a used tool.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll pass them along. I'm hoping that he'll be patient enough to buy quality, but when your a teenager waiting can be hard to do.

I was more than pleased with my Kick. The screwdrivers on it are superior to the ones on my Surge and Charge.

You might want to wait a bit for the Leatherman Wingman and Sidekick, they are specifically targeting the casual/first time MT user and have a price point at $30, but have similar toolset to a wave.

By the way, Amazon ships free for the two items I mentioned.

Bass Pro is still listing the Leatherman Blast for $34.97...That price has been the same on their site for a while now. Cheaper than the Fuse by about $10 the way they have pricing listed. Not sure how much the shipping is though...if anybody has a store local to them it sounds like a good deal!

Thanks for all the suggestion. The coming models look intriguing, and sometimes I forget about the great deals that Bass Pro has. I passed the suggestions along to my nephew and now he is considering the blast. Initially he was most intrested in a Wave, which I think is a great multi-tool (in fact that is what I carry) but is a bit expensive to someone earning his money by pushing a mower around town.

How are the SOG Micro ToolClips?
Price is right for a kid with a lawn mowing business.

The new Leatherman Style models look interesting, and the same price as the above SOG. I haven't held one though.
Their Squirt ES4 and the Kick models are under $30, and I know those are decent tools for the money.

I have not been impressed with the Gerber tools I've seen recently - for the same price, I would rather have a smaller or simpler tool with higher quality.

Nothing wrong with the Gerber MP400 or MP600 in my experience but I can't stand the Suspension, avoid at all costs no matter how good a price you might find it for.

+1 for the LM Kick.
In my opinion, if budget is limited, the only good reason to spend more would be wanting the scissors.
If pliers are not a 'must', then my vote goes for a Vic Tinker or a Vic Alox Pioneer.

I was in the area so I stopped in at the Bass Pro in the Charlotte, NC area, they do have the Blast for the price I mentioned above...$34.97 The one for that price is with the nylon sheath (my preference)...they one with the plain black leather sheath is $20 more...obviously somebody hasn't figured out the pricing. There was not a large selection of Leatherman products. They even had a SuperTool 200 still on the hook for just under $50.

I've bought LM Waves new off eBay for $40, just takes a little bit of patience for the right deal, but it'd be hard to find a better deal anywhere.

i want a wingman. but my favorite multi tool is the skeletool. im not sure how much they are but that is the best choice for edc pocket multitool.
