Hi all, I'm looking for natural rattan treated sticks
with the skin left on them. Are there any good
online sources out there?

A good bet would be to look for a furniture shop which also sells rattan furniture. Sometimes they also sell 2 metre rattan staffs which you can cut into smaller sticks. Significantly cheaper.

Metis:

That's the only place I get my sticks. You can walk in there and they have hundreds of these 12 foot poles (diff thickness) in the middle of the store.

I just take the straightest ones and they give me a hacksaw to cut them down to size in the parking area.

Highly recommended if you are within 50 miles of the Bay Area, CA

Really? I'm on a pair now that started to shred after a few (~6) practice sessions.

I dunno if I just got bum sticks or what.

How long should sticks last?

If you're hitting air, then a long time.
If you're hitting a tire, then a long time.
If you are gardening with it (instead of a machete), then a long time
If you are hitting concrete and metal poles, then your arms will hurt and they won't last very long.
If you are hitting someone else's stick in drills or a wooden stake in your backyard, then it can last as little as one minute. Make sure you stop to smell the burning rattan.

I remember seeing the "breaking sticks" demonstration on the DB videos.

"Currently six (black,albi,gold,gold,lightgreen,wildtype)"

:(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cant get any in canada, no ones bringing them in any more, all i can find are mudpuppys, arent nearly as fun, hard to catch too.

Any recommendations on where to get good Kamagong sticks or anything heavier for training?

KIL (bloodsport.com) has kamagong and hickory.

Mad Dog used to have kamagong for $50 a pair. they were excellent.

An alternative also are those clear hollow aircraft "plastic" sticks that this guy in Northern CA sells.

I am sure someone here will remember all the details. But they are virtually indestructible. They definitely aren't forgiving upon impact (vibrations) but they do deserve a place among your sticks.

I have pretty much all the different types you can get, synthetic-wise anyway...Newt's WA sticks; Eric Blair's F-Stix and walking staffs, MIGstix, Stickman's stuff. Going along with Kelvin, I would recommend for kamagong Kris Cutlery (very good wood), fighting rattans from K.I.L. (He won't sell anything he wouldn't fight with himself and he was, maybe still is, a big-time Dog Brothers member). The K.I.L. rattans were the only ones I'd put up against my F-Stix (although eventually I think they'd break against these).
http://www.stickman-escrima.com is the site for the synthetic hollow stuff. I have a solid, clear Shadow model, 18" long, very cool. Looks like a toy, and being kinda clear, you don't really notice it, especially from a distance. I also have the flute; it's hollow, and Jeff burns holes in it so that it's a shakuhachi (end blown Japanese flute used for music as well as meditation). It is in good tune and I can take it anywhere, since I am practicing on a real shakuhachi made of bamboo so I can blow some tunes out if need be. Don't be fooled by these hollow ones- the flute, as well as the shadow clear solid stick, are made out of Lexan (Spelling?), the same as riot shields and motorcycle canopies. These are very low-key. Re: the flute...the holes do add some structural weakness to the tube, but it really doesn't seem to be much. Mine's around 24" I think and I have smacked it against a Wave bag as well as on myself. I'm sure that it could do some damage before it would actually break. I want to get another one eventually, hopefully one with five holes instead of six (five is more like the traditional shakuhachis).

Sniperboy has some for sale here on BladeForums in the
Gadgets and gear section, it's kinda an old ad but
if you peform a search you can find the ad.

I'm on my fourth set. Most of them were pretty good, but the last set (31" x 1") completely shredded after one two hour session. Granted, we hit pretty hard in Lartosa Escrima, and we could sure smell the burning rattan; but, Nick advertises his sticks as being very hard. Granted, they're harder than anything else I've used. Does anyone make harder rattan sticks?
