Hey all. I am looking to oil a kershaw scallion that i just bought from walmart (black tungsten dlc coating), and was wondering if any of these lubricants i have around will work. they are as follows.

- Hoppes Elite Gun Oil
- Tetra Gun Lubricant
- Honda HP Chain Lube (with "white graphite")

any opinions will be appreciated. Thank you!

IMO Most lubricants will work. Most everyone has there favorite and I am sure some are much better then others. I would stay away from a chain lube as it usually is made to go into the chain like water then after hitting the air turns to a thicker gel. This is so it does not fly off when the chain is moving. Militec has very good reviews. I like a product called Tri Flo. It has teflon in it and can also be purchased in a dry film lubricant which goes on wet and dries to a film, Also as standard liquid lubricant. Super lube (use when knife is disassembled) is a type of grease w/teflon that I have good luck with. We used it in the drug business on punches and dies running at a very high speed. Tested by our labs as being the safest if it ever got in the product. Use you knife to cut food? Many choices out there. If you use too much of anything it will just attract dust/dirt. This you want to avoid. These are just my opinions and am always looking for something better to use.

The knife probably came oiled, so you may not need to oil it already unless something has happened to the knife (trip through the washing machine, etc.). In my experience, a new knife usually needs more attention in the area of removing excess oil.

I agree that whatever you use, use the absolute minimum amount to prevent attracting dirt. For this reason, I also prefer the dry lubricants. Most good ones are teflon based and any of these will work. My personal favorite dry lube is a wax-based lube called White Lightnin. It keeps the knife very clean. The lube most widely recommended across these forums is Militec-1.

Sounds good. I'll look out for that militec. In the meantime i put a drop of tetra-gun. The knife seemed pretty dry when i first bought it so i thought i'd give it a little. Thanks for the replies!

Hoppes #9 gun oil works, and I use it, but will gum up/attract pocket lint over time. No problem since I clean and re-lube my EDC's on a regular basis. Militec is great, and most all ACE hardware stores carry it. Birchwood Casey gun oil is a good choice too. Whatever you choose, use it sparingly and work it down into the pivot when you apply it.

I use CLP - because that's what I have for my guns, and the hoppes bottle I have doesn't have a straw for me to get down on the sides of the blade that go against the handle very well.

Shot of brake cleaner at the end of the week, let it dry out, and add another drop.

jeep, while a shot of brake cleaner will clear the gunk/old lube outta the pivot, the OP needs to remember that the Scallion is SpeedSafe, and he doesn't want to get that stuff down into the torsion bar cavity.

I have used many lubes including tri flow, white lightning, prolink gold, hoppes, 3-in-1 and probably some others. I really want to get my hands on some militech-1 though.

In any case, I really like triflow as it stays very well, is extremely slick and relatively clean. I've had great results applying a drop or two then blowing clean with compressed air. Prolink is just about as good also.

White lightning did not impress me a lot. At first it was great, but it is a wax and kind of gums up over time. Doesn't collect any debris though.

I recently switched over to Tetra Gun Grease, and so far it's working good. The Tetra seems to be about the same consistency of the lube that comes from Kershaw's factory. Like SPXTrader, I strip, and clean my knives on a regular basis. So, we'll see how the Tetra stands up.

One thing that also seems to help is that I strip down all of my new aquisitions, and polish all internal moving parts, and their mating surfaces.

I have read a few similar complaints of White Lightning, but I have not experienced this problem myself. I am not sure why, but it may be because I use it so sparingly. I try to put a very minimal amount on at first, wipe the excess and then do not reapply on any kind of regular basis. The stuff seems to last forever for me (like years). And I no longer have to do much if any routine cleaning of the pivot either. It has been a very low-maintenance process for me, which I appreciate.

But everyone has their own preferences and different knife materials and usage patterns, so YMMV.

get benchmade's blue lube it will work much better than regular oil

Does anyone use powdered graphite? I just tried it on a cheap slippie and it worked great although I'm not sure about long-term effectiveness and you really have to be careful to wipe off the excess.

I dont know about graphite, one of the reasons to oil a knife is to aid in corrosion prevention.

Can't believe no one's suggested Tuf-Glide. Works great, and doesn't attract dirt. Best corrosion protection I've found, too.
