I think the Buck 110 or the 119,and the Schrade PH-1 are the best all time hunters in the traditional blades, for the modern I whould have to go with the Spyderco Wegner

I've never been much of a Buck fan but we are on the same page on the Wegner.

I'd say the most hunting blade for the money is a tie between Buck Vanguard and Fallkniven F1. Pick your price range and each is competitive IMHO. Above $100 and you'll have to ask someone else.

:
I would have to go with the Marbles in 52100 that's been cyro treated.
But then I like High Carbon Steel.
I have a Woodcraft in stag and love it.They also come in Maple and stacked Leather.

I also have one that's about 50 years old that I am considering sending back to the factory for polishing and such. The only damage this one had was spending most of that 50 years in the sheath and it etched the blade.
I think it gives it character. It does need a new sheath though. I would gladly purchase that from Marbles.

There's also a review on Marbles in that forum you may want to read.

If you mix milk of magnesia with vodka and orange juice do you get a phillips screwdriver?

My favourite hunting knife is an old Gerber C375 I purchased over 20 years ago when they were still using "high speed tool steel". I believe it is M2. Great shape andat 3.75 inches, a good all round length. Of modern knives, I prefer the CS master hunter in carbon V although it is a tad longer than I prefer.

I think you could divide this into fixed and folding.

For folding, I agree with the original post.

For fixed, Marble's Fieldcraft, Woodcraft, Sport, or Plainsman. These are just outstanding knives for the money. I have a Buck Vanguard and it is excellent as well but the Marble's have more of a custom feel. I like the edge geometry of the Vanguard, though.

I don't own one, but for the fixed blade I too would go with the new Marbles with the 52100 ball bearing steel.

One of the Bucks in folding.

My favorite hunting knife is the Cold Steel Master Hunter in Carbon V. It is just the right size and holds an edge very well. It is also not a bear to sharpen.

For a belt knife I like the design of the Buck Vanguard the best. I prefer to get it with either the buckcote Zirconium Nitride coating (something like 90 rockwell) or track down one of the last Master Series models in BG-42 alloy.

For a folder I like the Buck 110 design since if works well for game from rabbits to elk in size. Again, I prefer not to get the basic 420HC alloy blade. Options include buckcote or using their online semi custom order system and getting one with BG-42 blade.

I don't see much point in carrying both the belt knife and the large folding hunter at the same time. I tend to carry just the Vanguard and a gentleman's folder for small game like rabbits. Browning makes some very nice and economical small game knives out of AUS-8 that take a razor edge. When you really use a folding hunting knife a key feature is the ability to drop into hot soapy water to clean. The Brownings are also good for that.

Johno-the Schrade PH1 is the Pro Hunter 1. It's a Loveless design with a small drop point blade and a nicely contoured handle of varying materials; mine is black micarta. The steel is called "Schrade+" which is think is 440C. Nice knife, nice sheath, and nice price. There is an original Schrade Loveless knife on Ebay right now that looks just like one-search for Loveless.

Paul thanks for your help on the PH-1.this realy is one of the best knives Schrade ever made,if you get a chance to buy a Schrade SG8 pick one up,also a Schrade discontinued item,it is a large drop point skinner lockback.I worked mine over on the spyderco sharpener, turned out great,

Thanks for the replies. It's funny how some butt ugly models do well year after year but other nice looking knives get discontinued pretty quickly.
