What is the general consensus? What is the best oil for conditioning and treating our blades against rust? Something that is non-toxic and food safe.

I normally use Renaissance wax on the blade and then coat it with CLP Collector to guard against rust. I have no idea if it is food safe.

You can read about the oil here:

Here is the wax:

I've had good luck with TSI-321, which is sold as both a fishing reel lube and a firearm CLP. It's also great on air rifles as it neither diesels nor attack seals. I cannot speak to food toxicity, though its MSDS looks pretty benign, as I recall.

Try FrogLube if you want non toxic.

Another Shepard posted some great information that is well worth your time to read

FWIW in my testing no oil held up very well at all. Keep in mind this was testing steel left out in the elements. The first time it rained at all, the was the end of the oils. I'd look for some kind of paste, if they could be in harsh environments.

I use Rennaisance wax as recommended above. But only on Damascus blades and I give 3 coats, one every day or so for 3 days. Because Damascus has surface unevenness (unless it's Damasteel, which I use just 1 coat). My regular blades I wipe with an oil-impreganted cloth, of which there are many on Amazon.

Oh, renn wax will make your blades (and handles) really shine, in addition to providing protection.
