I'm in need of either a 701 or 901 model knife.

Where's the best place to get a good price on a new one? Is there any place online that has good deals?

I don't need anything fancy, just the basic model.

Thanks,

Dan

Dan,
While I am not familiar with a 901, the Buck 701 was the largest knife in the now discontinued 700 series of heavy duty pocketknives. I sometimes see one offered on eBay and that may be the best place to locate one. However, I am sure that there are dealers who still have some of these on hand. You might try Dennis Wright. He lurks on this forum and can be emailed if you find one of his posts.
The 700 series knives were shaped somewhat differently than we are used to seeing. Some people really liked them for their stoutness. It would seem, however, that not enough people bought them. The line was first introduced in the 1980 catalog (model 703 Colt) and subsequent models were soon added. So, the series had a run of 20+ years and that is not bad.
Buck will still accept special orders for these knives if the dealer will meet their minimum requirements. I am unsure what the minimums are, but I would guess 250 or 500 units.
The 700 series can be found with birchwood, stag and the most recent "hardwood" inlays. Also, a few special order jigged bone examples were made in the early 90s for Bass Pro Shop and there are probably some other special order inlays which I have forgotten about. (I am submitting this info without benefit of my written research notes.) The earliest models had script tang stamps before block letter stamps were introduced in about 1984-85. Handle
shields were originally script and later block and some of us have collected models which have block tang stamps with script shields and knives with script tang stamps and block letter shields.
I have probably told you more than you really care to know but there may be some 700 series fans out there who will appreciate this info.

Larry,

The information you gave me is great!

It seems that I have seen a 701 at the local hardware store, but other than that, I can't find 'em online.

I'll try to find Dennis, and I'll let you know.

Any owners out there willing to fess up? :D

Thanks,

Dan

Larry,

Thanks for the link. I had actually seen that one. The one I'm looking for has only one blade.

I guess I don't have to have the 701, or 901. I just want one that is similar to the 501 but larger in size, single-blade, lockback. It can even be brass/brown, instead of silver/brown.

It's for my father - to replace his 501.

The 500 is just a shade larger than the 501 and about the same size as the 112, but the 112 has a larger rear bolster and slightly wider. The 500 retails at $55 and the 112 at $56. You can get the 112 at Wal-Mart cheaper than most dealers can buy them due to the quanities they get. Some of their stores also carry the 500. Both knives are currently available and stocked by Buck. I have both available for $35 each plus postage and insurance ( about $4.65 ).

Thanks for the info.

I'll keep looking around.

My father has his mind set on the 501, 701, 901 design/styles. He also wants a larger blade. I'm guessing... 3 1/2" blade or larger.

What would be the best design/style for this size?

Dan

Per Buck catalog, the 501 has a 2 3/4" blade. It's bigger brother the 500 has a 3 1/8" blade and the 112 a 3" blade. The new Revolution model 435 has a 3 1/2" blade and is sharp looking. A little smaller is the new Approach with a 3" blade. Both new knives are designed for the outdoor user.

Have fun searching Gene :) :D

What's the largest sized blade that Buck makes (in a single-blade lockback)?

Dan

Dan,
In lockback configuration, the 110 blade is the longest and I suppose the largest. The 500 Duke blade may be a bit wider but the 110 blade is longer.
Dan, please look back at your initial question about the 701 and 901. The 701 is a three blade stockman pocketknife and I do not think the 901 exists. The single blade lockbacks made by Buck give you a wide range of styles and price points from which to choose. If you need a catalog, send me a legal size, SASE and I will mail you a mini-catalog brochure.
My address is PO Box 297, Peru, IN 46970
Hope this is helpful!

A model 901 is actually a D-Guard Bowie that was made in the Buck Custom Shop while it was open. I think you might mean a 501.

Or, just to confuse the matter some more, the "801" was the 701 with a deep etched scene of horses on the blade. Could that be it?

hi joe, i have a 701 with a scene of running horses on the blade that is stamped 701, is the 801 the same knife with a different number?
