What is the best place to get a few rolls and crowns of sambar stag? I found a few sites that offer it, but only need a few pieces for now. eBay has some, but don't know if I want to trust the sellers just yet for those prices.

If there is a great place to get some any help would be appreciated.

I will be using for hidden tang projects and possibly slabs as well.

Thanks!

Vince

Call Culpepper's Supply. They sell on Ebay but if you know what size, figure, price you're searching for then just call them.

I don't think "decent price" applies to stag anymore unfortunately. I'll be watching replies to see where the "deals" are.

I used to buy a handful or top grade stag from Ron Wilson for $100. Now it is hard to get a good single crown for $100. Culpepper is the best source as far as I know now.

A maker was getting out of the business a while back and offered me three boxes filled with sambar stag crowns and rolls..... at least 150 or more. He wanted $3000. I passed, thinking it was way too much....foolish me :(

That's what I'm finding. Is there a good alternative to sambar that works just as well but doesn't cost so much? What about polyklone? I saw a few pieces on eBay for a decent price but don't know what it is or where to even get info on it? I'm assuming it's plastic made to look like stag

European red stag works well for all but the largest knives.

Bill, do you know where to get red stag from? Ellen hinting does not have, and I'm not sure where else to look

Thanks,

Vince

I buy mine at knife shows so I can see what I'm getting. I believe Culpepper sells it.

I have found Culpeppers a bit of a hit or a miss type of thing. You can get a really nice piece, or...a piece with an unworkable bend, cut, etc. It's pretty much the luck of the draw. The next time I get to a show I will load up on stag.

Yeah best bet with Culpepper is either buy from them at Blade, or go to their warehouse in Otto, NC.

They have good stuff, but you've got to pick through it, to find something that'll work.

Unfortunately, the guy on Ebay who had the best sash had a fire sale here everything had to go but not at normal fire sale prices. I both a huge craver from him a few months back, but didn't grab anything the last round and am regretting it now. Nice carvers that you used to get for $25-35 a piece from folks like the nice Indian couple that brought bins of the stuff to Blade back in like 2009 were going for $75 to well over $100 before they dried up. I remember my shock at having to pay $70 and $90 for some big bowie sized pieces back in like 2011 when the prices went through the roof the first time.

I watched all those pieces go on Ebay. I couldn't afford any of the pieces I wanted. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

I live in elk country. There are some nice ones but the biggest ones are spendy at about $150 for one branch. Also the knobby ones are rare with most being smooth. But one branch usually lasts me a year.

I bought a bunch of sambar stag tapers, some of them big enough for a hidden tang bowie, from USA knife maker recently. I know they aren't nice even rolls or crowns but I was really pleased with the quality and quantity both. I think I got 24 for about $100 + shipping. I plan to cut them into scales for smallish knives and think I got quite a bit of workable material. Here are a few pictures of a couple pieces.
