Where can I get a good price on some D2?

I got a really good deal on Ebay awhile back. 20# for about $25 shipped. They're pretty heavy drops, and have to be forged out to make use of it, but I was thrilled.

dan check out pops knife supplies. i know he carries some not sure of the prices but i know pretty much anything he carries he can be pretty hard to beat on prices
good luck man

Daniel, No matter where you get it from, be sure to test it for proper heat treat temps and soaks. The D2 that I got form Flatstock.Com Required a high heat than what I got from Mcmaster Carr. It was still good steel, ya just gotta check it.

Daniel, lately I have been using a lot of the Timken-Latrobe (Koncor) D2 from Flat-stock.com. I have found it to be a superb steel when used with the Crucible recipe.

Heat to 1200 F and equalize for 15 minutes. Heat to 1450 F and equalize for 15 minutes. Heat to 1850 F and soak for 20 minutes. I plate quench with steel plates (all I have at the moment) while blowing compressed air on the blade. I am getting a consistent 64 - 64.5 Rc as quenched, and a consistent Rc 60 when tempered at 500 F.

Daniel. How much do you need? Contact me if you want a small amount. I have some old stock of 18" x1.5"w x 1/8" thick D2 . I can spare a bar if you want. As I recall it measured just a tad over 1/8" thick but I think that is what it was sold to me as. If its not even that much you need I may have a smaller piece out there that was cut off the bar also.

Fox - thanks for the great information.

STR - I'm in need of some 5/32" thick stuff...thanks for the offer, though!

I'm probably going to heat-treat this with the PCB Special powder (or equivalent) rather than foil.
