Just wondering what some opinions are of multi tools. Right now I am thinking that the Leatherman Wave is the way to go. I am looking for a tool that can handle anything that I through at it.

Thanks,
Poniard

I've used the Gerber multi tool, Spyderench and many of the Leatherman series. My favourite is the Wave, it seems to do just about anything I can throw at it !

I started out with the original Leatherman PST and have carried just about everything that's come out since.

My experience with the Wave and Pulse is limited to having friend who use them, but I have a pretty good idea of what they're like.

My personal favorite, at the moment, is the new Gerber Legend. It has all the features I loved about my previous Victorinox SwissTool (tools on the outside, all tools lock, tough construction). In addition, the Legend is much lighter and has thumb tabs to open the knife and scissors one-handed. Take a look at it.

The "best" multitool depends on your needs at the time. I used an original Gerber Multiplier and was quite satisfied with it until I broke it. I really like the Leatherman Wave, but I really need a built-in ruler (which the Wave doesn't have). I really like the Leatherman Supertool, but the handles bit into my hands too much when squeezing down really hard. I currently have a Victorinox Swiss Tool that I am happy with. When Leatherman produces their upgraded model of the Supertool later this year, I'll probably wish I had waited for it to come out. Like I said, it all depends on your needs at the time -- tools vs. finish vs. durability vs. weight vs. customer service vs. price.

Bob Q: I'm curious as to whether you still use your Swiss Tool or if it met an untimely demise. I'm a new owner of a Swiss Tool and am wondering what I have to watch out for, if anything.

Despite a lot of hard use I never managed to do more than scratch up the finish. When I fell in love with the Legend I gave the SwissTool to a friend who wanted it for vehicle carry, where the weight wouldn't matter to her. I think the Legend is somewhat more capable than the SwissTool, aside from the weight difference, but they are both superb tools.

Aside from the Micra on my keychain, the one I carry most is the Leatherman Sideclip, because of the clip, its relatively small size, and the fact that I usually have the Micra scissors with me.

I like the design of the Wave, but I find it too thick and heavy for pocket carry, and I don't want to use a belt pouch. Also, I don't think much of the knife blade on it. However, the array of tools is great. If you want one comprehensive tool, this is the one. I also like that there's now a tool adapter for it.

The Pulse is thinner and lighter than the Wave. A very nice solid design, good for everyday "in town" carry, loose in a pocket. Good selection of tools, including scissors and file (and a ruler for kuma575). No saw, however, which makes it less suitable for the wilderness. It took me a while to get used to the locks, but I like them now.

I have a SuperTool in my bugout bag. It has the best array of tools for the outdoors, including a saw, an awl, and a serrated blade. No scissors, tough. I too am bothered by the handle bite when squeezing hard on the pliers. I'll probably buy a new one when the modified version comes out.

I have a SpyderWrench that I carry sometimes, mostly because the clip makes it easy. I think it's a marvelous design, but I don't find myself using it much. I find the needle-nosed pliers on the Leathermen more useful, and I've hardly ever used the crescent wrench. Also, disassembling it to get to the bits is rather annoying. It's biggest plus is that it has a real Spyderco blade. If I wasn't going to carry a separate folder, I'd probably go with the Spyderwrench.

Leatherman: For heavy duty use the Supertool, has lots implements (all lock)and very rugged. Everything on it works (blades are super sharp) heavy but not in the hand and takes abuse. For casual carry the wave is great, well made useful implements, you can access the knife blades (stright and serrated) without opening the rest of the tool and very comfortable in the hand. All Leathermans are very well made and stay tight. But like everything else in life everybody has their favorites and all for different reasons. Good Luck Weldonk
