Best Price on the Buck Mayo?

Northshore or TNT? Either way, e-bay's probably the best bet for lowest price, unless you can find one in the Exchange forum.

i got mine at thebrightedge.com great, prompt service. and shipping was free, can this get any better? the buck mayo seriously is the best production folder i ever handled (imo sebenza isn't truly "production")

I think the sales are few because it is a very expensive Buck knife. Joe public does not know who Tom Mayo is and just see's a expensive knife with a bunch of holes in the handle. I admit I was a little skeptical at the price until I handled one even knowing it was a great design.

I think you are exactly right. I found a Buck Mayo in a store in the Winston-Salem area with a price tag of $296.00 (MSRP). The guy sold it to me for $170.00. He tried to get me to buy two more he had in the back for the same price because I was the only person who had come in and had an appreciation for the knife.

I agree. Had I not handled one, I would never have considered it. Once I did, it was the only one I wanted. AWESOME knife.

It's great, i was carrying mine today. They pop in in the exchange pretty frequently in the $150.00 range. That's where I got mine, with all original stuff.

The reason it doesn't sell is simple numbers and percentages. For a Buck product to be successful and sell in their normal quantities they need Big 5, WalMart and K Mart selling the stuff. The problem is that if the average Joe is shown a KErshaw Vapor and a Buck Mayo, only a very few will see much difference at all, nevermind enough to justify another $280.00. The big retailers know their customers and thereby don't display or stock an item that's not likely to turn often, and because of the price, they'd probably end up losing more to theft than they sold, so why bother. Many manufacturer's will build a very high quality product for a limited market, knowing that it will never sell well as a credibility builder for their brand. Sometimes those items can be a real bargain as the manufacturer does an exceptional job with top materials. I think that's what buck has done here.

Best production folder? I don't know? I probably carry my Benchmade 941 Ti - 01 more often and it's made of the same materials, but the Buck is awesome and easier to find than the Ti-01 941. I think the Buck Mayo is actually be a better slicer, but I like tip up carry and the speed of deployment of the 941/Axis lock. Don't ask me to decide, I can't, that's why I have both. Ti and S30V mmm.....

yes, it is the best production framelock EDC. It's got Paul Bos heat treated S30V steel and full titanium handles and clip, is smooth as silk.

Plus, when flamed-coloured lightly (you can easily do a DIY over the gas stove), it will look so FREAKIN AWESOME!!!

And if you want to mod it further, just disassemble the whole thing, do a satin hand rubbed finish on the blades, resharpen it on an edgepro, and it'll look like an original Tom Mayo sans the logo (no, not really....but close) :D

;) ;) ;)

You guys are convincing me to order one but... how left-hand friendly is it? It looks like the the opening hole is partially obscured by the lock bar.

hate to say this but it's not lefty friendly.

why don't you try the spyderco paramilitary with the compression lock?

Thanks for your help spyken, even if it is bad news. Saved me the return costs.

You know, others have made comments on why sales on some models are low and I can only think that things would improve if manufacturers would stop designing products that ignore about 20% of the market. Is it really that hard to make this knife ambidextrous?

Blue Sky,

not too sure exactly abouit the buck-mayo cuase i'd only manage to ply with it once during our gathering but from my own experience with it it is lefty friently ..... i'm a lefty and no problem to get the blade out, one-handed ..... i have the original tnt-mayo though which i think where the buck was sampled from (manage to compare the two, difference was the finished, weight and colour) and mine is flawless for lefty .....

Blue Sky,

getting the blade out is not a problem at all, thanks to the mayo designed hole opening device (functions like a spyderco hole), but I believe that the framelock design allows the lockbar to move a little when you squeeze the handles real tight (as the handle is itself the lock). For righties, the lock becomes more secure, but for lefties, the opposite.

Also, unlocking it requires a bit of finger-manoeveuring, I think.

Why don't you handle one in person? I may be wrong....cos I'm a rightie.

Thanks for the replies, guys. i have been wanting one of these, and I'm getting closer to taking the plunge. :)

I own two Buck Mayo's , one stock and one modified. I find both to be as lefty friendly as any right hand knifeand I don't find them hard to open or close. For the price I think it's an excellent knife when you consider the blade steel and construction and if Buck made a true left hand model it would be perfect. Larry

Maybe all is not lost... Opening it left-handed is not a problem, but lock security may be slightly compromised.

I've carried a Camillus EDC for a while now and have not had concerns with the lock, though closing it is slightly awkward compared to doing it right-handed. Unfortunately thats just something left handed people have to deal with every day. As long as opening is not an issue, it may work out after all, though spyken's comments about the lock will be considered. I don't think there is any chance of a left hand version coming out.

Thanks for all the input gentlemen. Sorry if I hijacked the thread on you Coonskinner. FWIW, Top of Texas has it for $168.00, lowest I've found.
