I am looking to find out which company currently produces the finest slip-joint knives as far as fit and finish? I am new to slip-joints and I have only owned one(custom Joel Chamblin).

Thank you.

Hi WF,

I'd rate them:

1) Schatt and Morgan: They've switched to 420 HC which bothers me a bit, but they're tops in fit/finish. There's enough mint old ones that you should have no trouble finding one you like.

2)Case Classics- Another great contract brand by Queen. These were produced in the 90's, but again, there's enough mint ones around that there's no problem finding them. Search Gus's posts here for some great eye candy.

3)Case-Bose: I haven't owned one, but have handled a few, and they were great.

You'll noticed I included a few out of production brands, the honest truth is that for spectacular fit and finsh most of the time, you have to go with a company's special editions.

On the commonly available brands, I'd rate them something like this:

1)Eye Brand.
2)Queen.
3)Camillus.
4)Schrade- Nice fit, very plain finish. They put out great special editions, and are great users.
5)Case- some nicely fitted, some yuk. Really a brand you have to handle in person.

I've left out a few brands, simply because I don't have enough expierence with them to comment.

Victorinox is the most consistent I've seen. The Schatt & Morgan's are really nice too.

Just to clarify bob bowie's reply, Schatt & Morgan is a Queen brand. Have to agree Queen is tops.
Winchester's from Blue Grass Cutlery are also top notch. I"ve heard these are also contracted from Queen.
Case Select series is also high in quality.
There are also some great old fashioned slip joints being produced in France, particulary
Fontenille Pataud. These are old French and Italian patterns though, not the familar English/American patterns.
