best products to clean a knife

hey guys i have a question. a friend of mine has a dukk (or however you spell it) and it is really rusty. i looked at it the other day and it appears to be mostly surface rust. I was wondering what would be the best way to clean it up? i figured some really fine sanding plus a buffer with the right metal polish might help clean it up. he is learning about knife maintenence through me thanks to you guys.

so what would you suggest? i may be able to get a pic for you guys to see tomorow (or today depending how you look at it) and help with your opinions. any products and tips would be great.

I know this sounds strange but Bon Ami cleanser is great for polishing rust as it's used by custom car show participants...It's about 89 cents and works great and as the little chicken on the label says..."It hasn't scratched yet"

It is used on $100,000.00 show cars and cleans rust and grime to a fine polish and then put on a a little coast of wax...It really works.
