What oil would be the best to put on a blade to protect it from rusting while it is stored? Are there oils for this specific purpose and some for lubrication only? Or is it oils is oils as they say

CorrosionX is made specifically to protect metal from rusting. I haven't tried it but it is supposed to work good. Eezox is supposed to work about as good as well.

For long term storage, I'd suggest grease.

I still have some RIG brand grease, but you can look through automotive stores for corrosion-prevention greases that will work fine on knives.

3 in 1 oil it great stuff.i have never heard about grease.i would ask around on that one...

I use plain old mineral oil from the laxative section of the pharmacy :) It's cheap, works great, and is food safe so you don't have to wipe it down before slicing your steaks or apples.

corrosion is supposed to be champ. will penetrate even under existing rust & form barrier between existing rust & non oxyidised metal. they even have a new product for long term storage. testimonials from marine boaters & people with equipment in or near h2o all the time ,swear by it.corrosion x is product name.

I have some Breakfree CLP that I use on my rifles but I never thought of plain old mineral oil. I always thought it had to be expensive to be any good.

These are the two best anti-corrosion liquid products made.
Many private parties, (including myself), have tested these against all the other usual lubes, ( CLP, Rem-oil, etc), in salt bath tests.
Corrosion-X and Eezox were clearly superior.

Sentry products make something called Marine Tough Cloth.
It works very well too. However, it is not a liquid, so you can't reach areas like pivots.

However, if all you are subjecting your knives to is the harsh environment of a safe, almost any old oil willl do. ( Not vegetable, it turns rancid)

For the last 4 years I've pretty much been using one product for protection, cleaning and handle preservation. Ballistol is what I use on G-10, Carbon Fiber, Micarta and other handles.

I find that Ballistol works great for storing cutlery for an extended time period. It also has reasonably good lubricating properties but I will admit that mainly use Militec for my most demanding lubricating jobs.

But Ballistol is a great product and you can buy from Spyderco Factory Outlet. I believe Brownell's who is a gun supply mail order catalog also sells Ballistol from what I'm told. You won't go wrong with Ballistol.

After using several types of oil during the last 20 years ( 3 in 1, WD40, RemOil, CLP, etc) I´m sticking to Corrosion X.

I'm more a gun person than a knife person. Rig has been a staple for decades. Of common household items, Vasoline is excellent. For true long term storage, nothing beats ALOX. The easiest way to get it is as Lee's Liquid ALOX, sold as a bullet lube. (It was originally automotive undercoating.)

Remember there is BIG difference between long term and short term storage. You can get away with oils for weeks, months, maybe even a year. When you put something away for long term storage, you expect it to be protected for decades, and you don't mind a serious clean up when you finally take it out.
