Last year I used my Buck 110 to carve the ole Halloween Pumpkin and this year I used a Benchmade Mini AFCK. The Benchmade was better for it's penetrating power and control in the tight corners. Aborted attempts: Schrade Sharpfinger, the flat ground fat blade bogged right down in the sticky thick flesh,Fallkniven WM1 was awsome out of the gate but I quickly realized the blade was too short.Next year,SEBENZA!!!(I wish...)C,mon everyone have some fun and use those blades!

I have a bunch of Victorinox boning knives, of various shapes. They are the ones used in commercial meat plants (a hog plant uses them here.) They are relatively soft steel (low 50's RC), but they do a good job on pumpkins :) It takes a few minutes before the carving frenxy to sharpen them up on my stones and they carve a pumpkin like mad. I just got a pumpkin yesterday actually :)

This year, I used the "beauty and the beast" :)

Beauty: small decorated "Solar Wind" Sebenza for the actual carving...:D

Beast: Cold Steel Recon Scout (7.5" fixed blade) for opening up the bottom and pulling out the "guts" :p

Is there any holiday that does not present an opportunity for the knife knuts? :)

The best tools for pumpkin carving are the small saws available for $ 3 or less in all grocery stores that sell pumpkins.

However, when the holiday closes, dutiful loyal Jack O'Lantern must be put out of his misery. It is not humane to allow him to succomb to rot and disease. Certainly the idea of sliding him into a plastic trash bag is out of the question.

Tradition at my house is that Jack is dispatched swiftly with a large sharp blade then his remains are scattered for small creatures to enjoy.

When it's my turn I use a circa 1400 katana, I'm a "user" not a collector. Others have chosen machete's, bowies, and large folders.

Try a Victorinox SAK saw. They are one of the best pumpkin carvers going.

Ya, much as I want to use my knives when pumpkin carving, so far nothing beats a saw with little closely-spaced teeth. I use the $3 cheapies mentioned above (although I think mine are much less than $3, roshi must be using the high-end super steel models :) ), they work better than any of my knives. I haven't tried the saws on my SAKs or multitools, I'll try to remember to give them a whirl tonight.

The $ 3 was for the VG-10 nitride coated saws;)

Seriously for $ 3 including tax I got two picks for creating holes for the two saws included. That way two kids can carve at the same time. I never carve myself. I just dispatch Jack to the pumpkin patch in the sky when the time comes.

Ya, mine actually came in a kit. I bought one of those books with fancy picture stencils, and it comes with hole pokers and saws.

I used the saw on my SAK Rucksack this year. It worked great, and when I needed a knife blade for touchups, I didn't even have to reach for a second tool...

Geez, I just got a new Opinel and didn't even think about using it:grumpy: Oh well ...next year.
