Best raw wood sealant/coating?

Howdy all,

Just about to wrap up something new for me and desperately need the advice of those that have tread this ground before. All my previous experience has been with synthetics (Micarta/G10/Carbon Fiber), so I'm a little lost here.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about filling the pores of the walnut half of these scales without obscuring the color or figure in the wood. I soaked the scales in a thinned out mixture of acetone and epoxy before I started working them, but I guess I've gotten down below the point the epoxy soaked in.

Here's a peek at where I am currently.

I'm working with walnut that I reclaimed from an old Remington 600 stock (Circa 1966) so it's plenty dry and stable, I'm just trying to figure out how to seal the pores properly, with durability and sweat/moisture resistance being the primary goal.

I've heard of folks using CA and am prepared to give that a try, but figured I'd pick the Almighty Brain of BF before I finalized my plans.

So what do you think? Thanks in advance!

I would use Watco Danish oil. Get it at Lowes or other hardware store. It soaks into the wood, seals it but lets the grain and color show. I have used it on lots of gunstocks with no complaints. Make sure you let it dry completely (2-3 days) before putting any wax on it. It dries faster than pure tung oil.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I should have been more specific with my question. I've used both linseed and Danish oil on gunstocks I refurbished in the past and while I was pleased with the appearance, I was looking for something that wouldn't need to be maintained with either more oil or wax.

I was looking for a synthetic finish that would cure hard and completely seal the grain, but that would penetrate like oil.

Does such a product exist?

Thanks again,

Taylor

Call off the hunt.

My Search-Fu was apparently very weak before I made this post of desperation in the wee hours this morning.

I took another stab at the search engine and discovered an amazing thread that includes the "who's who" of BF contributors hashing out the pros and cons of various wood finishes.

It can be found here.

Check it out. It's good stuff!
