Best respirator?

This is a spin-off from my safety glasses thread.

I've been using a North canister respirator. I think it is more of the problem than my safety glasses. The rubber that covers my nose extends up high enough that I think it is often keeping my safety glasses just off of my face. Enough that particles can slip through anyway.

I've looked at many different canister masks, but don't know that any would be better or worse than the one I have.

What do you use?

Thanks!
Nick

3M Breathe Easy 6 powered respirator. Solve both yer problems at once. I have to use one because with the emphysema it's hard to breathe through a mask. Very expensive, but very nice. Take a look at the powered visors, too. Not for all chem vapors, but good for dusts especially.

North 7700. I wear eyeglasses and don't have any problems. I use a face shield instead of safety glasses. After reading your previous thread, maybe the full-face respirator like the North 7600 is what you need.

Nick, i too use the 3M respirators...great fitting, and not muck of a problem at all with the safety glasses..just be sure to use the right filter/cans:)

I have a 3M Airstream AS400.

So far it's been great. The combination of respirator and eye protection in one is convenient, and having positive air pressure keeping stuff out feels better than hoping a seal will keep stuff from leaking in.

YIKES that's a big picture. It's a tiny little postage stamp on the website.

Gees! Nick. Your young enough. Just hold your breath. Thats what I use to do. I could get 2 to 3 grind passess between each breath. The only problem is ,you begin to see stars after awhile. But hell, that doen't necessarily mean it's a bad thing.

air stream helmet

You know a few years ago somebody here on this forum built one.

Hard hat, face shield and a little filtered 110 fan to blow air in the hardhat. Actually I think the intake of the fan used one of those 3m cartridge filters.

You don't need the battery powered one if you just stand in front of the grinder.

We worked a 70% nickel 30% cooper joob one time. To weld it we wound up useing breathing air and those cheap oxy masks like you see in the ambulance or recovery room of the hospital.

That was the most comfortable rig I've ever worn. Low positive pressure. WIsh I had one of those!:D

LOL! No effin way, Sweany! Wearing one of those would bring back flashbacks to my military days. No kidding... I have DAYS accumulated wearing time in a full-face gas mask. >>>shudder<<< :barf:

The Airstream does look like a really nice unit. A lot of the woodturners wear those. They are pricey though, but obviously they are the bomb.

I don't understand why some people are worried about breathing in a little metal dust, but their not worried about sucking in 1,2 maybe even 3 packs of cigarettes a day. Go Figure. I won't mention any names here, but you know who I'm talking about. :p

What's a respirator?

(not trying to be a smartass, just emphasizing the fact that I am stupid enough to not be using one)

All those years as a weldor, they told me the weld fumes couldn't hurt you, asbestoes, fiberglass, mineral wool kaowool and red lead, dust here's a paper mask.
Smoke,   DAMN THAT STUFF will kill ya. :lol
Old boilerhead I used to work with, would cut holes in his paper masks so he could smoke.

My Wife's great uncle was killed by tobacco, he was lying dead drunk in a ditch, when a tobbacco truck ran over him.

Sweany, who admits to being a second hand smoker

If I could quit smoking as readily as I can give you crap I sure wouldn't be sucking these butts anymore. Nothing like a reformed- smoker-as-saint-wiseass-friend.....;) Haven't you figgered it out? The congestion from the dust inhibits my ability to smoke...... :D Don't worry, though, Bill, I'll quit one of these days, and then you can lay a shovelful in the hole....

Have a good one, hill-Billy, my friend....
